I am putting together a book of pool rules. I found a game listed in Mike Shamos' book called "Action 8 Ball". Below are the rules I have gathered for the game. Does anyone have more information on this game?

Also, I don't understand the rack for this game. "The 8 ball is racked in the center, with the solids 1-4 placed in counterclockwise order and the stripes 9-12 placed in clockwise order around the 8 ball." There are a few ways in which this can be done so I'm not sure what the official way it's supposed to be racked.

Hot Eight
Also known as Action 8 Ball

Rules follow the General Rules of Pocket Billiards, except when clearly contradicted by these additional rules.

TYPE OF GAME:
Similar to 8-Ball but played with a short rack of nine balls

PLAYERS: 2 or two teams.

BALLS USED:
Standard set of object balls; object balls numbered 1-4, 8-12, plus the cue ball are used.

THE RACK:
Ball are arranged in the conventional Nine-Ball diamond. The 8 ball is racked in the center, with the solids 1-4 placed in counterclockwise order and the stripes 9-12 placed in clockwise order aroind the 8 ball.

OBJECT OF THE GAME:
To legally pocket the 8 ball.

SCORING:

OPENING BREAK:

RULES OF PLAY:
The table is open until the first ball is legally pocketed to determine the striker's group. Group balls must be pocketed in numerical order. A push shot is allowed after the break. A player may shoot at the 8 ball once that players group ball have been pocketed.

LOSS OF GAME:

ILLEGALLY POCKETED BALLS:

JUMPED OBJECT BALLS:

CUE BALL AFTER JUMP OR SCRATCH:

PENALTY FOR FOULS:
All fouls are penalized by ball in hand.

Like the bastardized game 7-ball, Action 8 is a made up game. It's just a shortened version of normal 8-ball. Stick with the normal games. There's enough made up rules already. jmo

All games were made up at one point. That's how they all started out. Hoyle lists hundreds of games in their rules of card games books, giving you lots of fun new games to try with a deck of cards. I'm not going to limit myself to the short list of 30+ games in BCAs book. BCA does a great job of giving us a clear rule book of the officially recognized games, but there are hundreds of other really fun games to play on pool table. So why not get the most out of your table and learn new games to try?

So let's get back to the topic here; does anyone know the rules for Action 8 Ball? I know there is an official organization who has information on the game listed in Mike Shamos' book. I might have to check into it. But if anyone knows anymore about the game, please share!

Cheers!

You're right! Good luck with your endeavor...

Hey I'm not trying to step on BCAs toes, but I play pool to have fun and there are lots of new funs games I've never tried out there. All I'm trying to do is gather all of them I can find and compile them together. I love to try out new games, not just billiards!

I don't understand how to rack the balls. The description Mike Shamos gives can be done in a few different ways.

I've saw some people playing this before and this is how they were racking...

Not saying its the same rack but this is what they were doing. (never knew the name but sounds like the same game)

Well, I think the rest of the rules are pretty close to 8 ball. I wasn't sure what the correct way to setup the rack. Thanks!
