Hey everyone, i was just wondering if any of y'all ever played in the ACUI regional/national 9-Ball tournaments when you were in college.

This is the first year i'll be playing and was wondering what they were like. (Overall skill level, what the races are to, double/single elim, how many players, etc.)

I did

I played when I was in college. It was 8 ball back then - race to 3- ball in hand. Max Eberle won it the two years I played in it. Regionals had a good mix of players. The Johnson City one was really fun because they had gold crowns and it was a nice room.

Acui

I played in the regionals 3 years and went to Nationals once due to scheduling conflicts. Our region didn't have the strongest competition for the regional tourney, the first year I played there was one other top notch player. Nationals has a wide range of players. There are a few top notch players. Lars Vardaman has gone back to back I believe. Paul Song is another player that is amazing. When I played, it was on horrible equipment. The tables all played different, there were dead rails and even one table had a staple under the cloth that affected play. I believe it was a race to 9, alternate break format.

The tournament im playin at is at ECU in Greenville, NC... I just hope they have some decent tables.

Only ERO's.... what region were you in?

What college did you qualify from? I qualified from Virginia Tech to go to regionals in Greenville, NC too but haven't decided if I'm going yet or not. I've been to a couple of them before. The competition isn't that great. There are usually a couple of good players that are significantly better than everyone else then the rest are about average. Even if you win regionals all you get is a chance to play in the nationals. At least thats how it was last year. It can be fun to play in but you don't really get anything for winning. I think the races are to 7 but sometimes changes because of time and equipment constraints. Sometimes you can find some action with the other people in the tournament.

I goto Roanoke college... there's only like three people up here that can even make a ball and the tables are like 7ft barboxes, so it's definately hard to get good practice in. I pretty much have to goto the poolhall in the city to play on decent equipment and against decent players

I'm an old fart and when I was in college ACU-I played 14.1!!! I never got past my college qualifying. We had a woman player from my school who finished second in the Nationals two years in a row. I think Dan Louie was a national winner one of those years and also Rich Geiler (sp?). I also think Nick Varner won it in the early 70's, also at straight pool.

I played out of the northwest region 16 I believe. The best finish I had at regionals was 2nd. I was invited to Nationals since the first place player could not afford it. I had to also decline because it was smack in the middle of midterm week and two professors would not let me take the exams early. How do those athletes get out of it? I would have gotten killed anyways as I had been playing 9ball for 3 or 4 months and was just a shot maker.

Dan Louie won it two years in a row, 1973 and 1974, If I remember correctly. Rich Geiler never did. You are correct, Nick Varner won it not once but twice and Bob Jewett won it once. All winners played 14.1.

It's interesting the progression from 14.1, to 8ball, and now 9 ball..... maybe for next year they'll play one-pocket. :D :D

Thanks, Lunch! I figured I didn't have it exactly right. I tried to go through the ACU-I association last year to get the results from all of those years. I could not find a single person who was familiar with that timeframe, much less know about any records from the era.

AM I REALLY THAT FRIGGIN' OLD?!?!?!?

At least we made it this far....

If you want an entire list of ACU-I winners, I found the information in the BCA Rule Book. It was the 1992 edition near the back.
