Adapting vintage rifle case for cues

I picked up an awesome vintage short scale rifle case at the rose bowl flea market in LA this past weekend. I measured it and it came out to exactly 31" which means it will fit a pool cue.

I was wondering what the best way would be to introduce a shaft and butt insert ? Should I rob from a cheap case t make this happen or do something else? I'm not a craftsman or super handy but just looking for an idea since this won't be my primary cue case (too small)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Looks cool.

In the past, I have managed to sneak my cue and case past the TSA as a carry on for a commercial flight.

I'm thinking you won't have to worry about how you can sneak that case on a plane, because you won't by a long shot.

Cue shafts and butt on the long side of the case and sawed off shotgun on the short side of the case LOL
 
Send it over to J Barton, I'm sure he'd love to do something with that. Would make one of the coolest cases around I think. Maybe he'd sell you one of his interiors so you can get it installed or try it yourself.
 
If I were the OP, I would NOT walk into a room with that case and ask...
...”Hey, anybody wanna shoot some?”

...especially a CC area.....:eek:
 
I was at Mandalay Bay for the Mosconi Cup recently. I was unsure whether to have drinks on-site or go to Griff’s. I favored Griff’s with my soft case on my back when I left my room but ended up opting to stay after a few star sightings in house. About 20 security guards surrounded me in a half circle asking to see what I was packing at the casino center bar. I’m thankful I wasn’t wearing THAT case over my shoulder at the time.

Do you have a photo looking into the top with the lid open?

Should be easy enough to stuff lined tubes for the cue, might even fit two shafts in there. Look up images of old Drilling rifles for ideas of how to make the cur openings look.

For the other part I’m envisioning a nice laminated compartment box that slips in there for all of your accessories, chalk, tools, maybe a pewter flask (if you’re a drinker), maybe even a spot in the box for snacks and antacid and such. I’ve seen some really nice woodwork for flyfishing gear over the years that the concept would work well.

And like others have already mentioned, carrying that into a non-permissive environment will get you some focused attention. Neat idea, but possibly having unintended consequences. I like it. Sort of the inverse of the old Tommygun violin cases.
 
not worth the trouble you will get. police will likely stop you and if you have anything illegal you are toast. so why draw attention to yourself. and thieves will look to steal it thinking there is a valuable gun inside. so you will get what you are asking for and that is attention.
same as open carrying of a gun. perfectly legal in most states but where ever you go you have problems.

Unfortunately, criminals, the sick perverted cowardly criminals have committed so many horrendous crimes against humanity, that your good idea may very well bring you more trouble then it is worth.

I like your idea, but I am and have been my whole life and always will be a gun guy, so heck ya I like your idea. But, if I was living in the "lower 48" instead of Alaska I would not want to walk around and go into most public places with that case.

Go get a permit and buy a Thompson sub machine gun and stick in that case! Then you would really have some thing and I would be green with envy.

If you still want it for a pool case, then hang-the-9 has a good idea. Contact master case maker John Barton.

I would make two inserts, one for the long space that holds the cues. And another for the short space for jump cues and accessories.
 
If you have your heart set on converting it, I suggest building a pull-out sleeve for cues and a separate sleeve for shotgun action and barrels.

I say this because properly restored, that case could fetch a decent return. I picked one up like that a flea market and with a little tlc and elbow grease, sold it for $500. New, they can run a couple thousand.
