I've got a room with 20 tables and full bar & kitchen.
When we add money to a tournament, be it $150 for a weekly thing (like I'm doing on Sundays) or $2500ish for a bigger weekend event (like Janis' Viking Tour) we always come out ahead, but only because of the bar & food sales.
I even do *FREE POOL* all day on Tuesdays & Wednesdays from open to close just to keep people spending money at the bar.
If I didn't have a bar there'd be no way I could afford to give away pool time for an entire day.
I look at the large tournaments as a marketing expense so I'm really just trying to break even after a two or three day tournament. Thus far we always won, but not by much.
The smaller tournaments are just a way to keep people in the building spending money. $100 or so if you've got a bar/kitchen is not a problem at all.
Maybe you could look at adding other things instead of money. Coupons for a day of free pool, an iPod Nano (buy 'em cheap on e-bay), a cheap jump/break stick, etc. Anything to keep the players interested in winning something a bit beyond the pot.
Also, look to your vendors to give you free stuff. Maybe your soda vendor will give you a free box/case of Coke. Or your cleaning service can give you free chemicals or something. Any way for someone else to subsidize even some of the added money is good.
Raise your table rates by $0.25/hr. After 400 hours of pool playing you've made that $100 to add to the pot. With only 5 tables with 2 people playing you only need 40 hours of table time per table, per week to make that extra $100.
I'm kinda rambling, so I dunno if this has been helpful or not.

I have a hard time trying to find money to add to tournaments and I see rooms on here adding from $500 and up all the time. Do you guys sell alcohol and have full kitchen to be able to add that much money ? Do you charge them table time. I need to know,
I have always heard if you charge table time you must add money.
I have no alcohol and only snacks here too. Township says no booze.
How do ya all do it ? If I add $100.00 here I cant make any money.
