On a recent trip up there I read in a local paper that the room was closing and everything inside was going up for sale. Shame, it was a great room. The way a room should be.

Adirondack Billiards closing for good Wednesday

GLENS FALLS - After 15 years as a fixture in the downtown landscape, Adirondack Billiards is calling its last shot on Wednesday when the business will close for good. And while owner Joe Stanislowsky said it's been a good run, lagging business and a long commute have become the deciding factors in the fate of the former hot-spot for area youth.

"We're closing because of a combination of factors," Stanislowsky said. "We took a hit with the no smoking indoors law and a lot of teenagers that used to come are now into online gambling or playing (pool) at home. There's just been less people coming -- less business overall."

Stanislowsky said downtown parking issues have also negatively impacted business since the Wood Theater opened.

"The Wood Theater uses up a lot of parking. I'm completely in support of the theater, but when they have events, there's nowhere to park. Winter is my busiest season and people won't park and walk to get here when it's cold outside. They just drive right on by," he said.

Todd Shimkus, president and CEO of the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce, agrees that parking needs to be addressed on Glen Street. He said that while progress has been made on parking in downtown overall, the next step is working towards better management of the spaces available.
