Advice Needed On Installing Plain Leather Wrap

hey Guys :)

I already know how to put on a linen wrap, as I used to do wrap my own cues by hand when I was a kid and I still can do it to a reasonable standard, (Although I won't do it for anyone else's cue(s) in case they aren't happy with the finished product).

With the ability to install a wond wrap, I'm still not sure on how to install a plain leather wrap on a cue stick and I was wondering if any of you good folks could give me any advice on how to install it correctly and neatly? :)

The leather wrap that I'm looking to use is an old plain leather soft cue case, and have decided to make a better use of the case, rather than having it sit in a corner gathering dust and I'm looking to install it onto a cue stick that has currently got a type of graphite grip on it, which I hate with a passion, and have decided to put a leather wrap on top of the wrap instead :)

Any advice/info is greatly appreciated as I'm hoping to get this project done sometime today or tomorrow :)

Thank you all in advance, I really appreciate it alot :)

Are you going to use one of those leather thingamajigs or just two pieces of masking tape and a ruler for a straight edge and a razor blade.

Hey Mike, how are ya buddy? :)

I'm looking to use the latter method as I feel that it's a much simpler and straight forward way of installing a leather wrap, but at the same time, I'm open minded at the moment because I would like to find out as much info as possible in order to make sure that I can do the best job I can :)

i can't imagine doing one perfectly without one of those thingamajiggys.i know there are some guys who can do it,but it seems tough.

Things were different not so long ago.

You say the cue butt has a wrap and you are thinking of wrapping the leather over it.
Normally, the butt is cut down to accommodate the thickness of the leather.
How do you plan to get the edge of the leather flush with the cue butt so there is no ridge at the ends of the wrap?

I was going to wrap over the op of the grip, but I would be happier removing the original grip as it's only a thin layer of rubber or something, as it's got that chalkboard paint feel to it, that I hate with a passion.

I done perfect leather wraps with a ruler gently clamped to a cue used that as a guide to cut the seam...

I still do them that way and just use two pieces of tape for a guide line for the straight edge, I tried one of the jigs, I'm just to stupid to use it, But the jig must work, it's keeping a couple of guys off the welfare line so that's good.

The last sentence was a joke guys, lighten up.

There is no doubt that there are excellent leather wraps that were done years before the jig was invented and they are still excellent wraps.
It takes a lot more work and skill to do one without a jig.
If the end result is the same ... and excellent leather wrap ... then it dont really matter much how it was done except for the time the cue maker spent doing it and the compensation for that time.
But even with the jig there are things like cutting the cue down to proper size, cutting the leather to the proper size, getting the ends to meet after trimming with the jig and such.
The jig helps get the cut lines straight and even but you still must butt the leather seam up by hand and that takes some skill.

If all you are intrested in doing is one wrap and not going into the leather wrap business my advice is just take it to someone who does leather wraps and get the wrap done.
