Advice on how to run a Ring Game?

Hi all,

I'm planning on having a small time ring game at my house. Max of 8 players in the game. This would be during a party with poker and other similar things going on.

Buy in would be small (~$50) and winner would take all. I'd like to be able to complete it in about 3 hours, but that isn't set in stone... can go all night if needed.

My main question is what "schedule" would be good for the bets? I was thinking of doing it by giving each player a certain number of poker chips (say 10 or 15) to use as their pot. It would start off at 1 chip ante per game and then increase as time goes by and/or players get knocked out.

Any suggestions on a good way of doing it would be appreciated. (i.e. timing for uping the ante)

Oh yeah... the game would be 9 or 10 ball... (with the 9/10 not wild on the break and possibly not wild during the rack.) The players involved can run racks, but not usually more than 1 or 2 in a row. The rules would be full offensive / no safety play.

Thanks, Chris

I would say start at 1 and double every 30 min.

If it were my game I wouldn't mess with the escalating scale. Too much bother imo. I'd just set the stakes at $5 per game and let the chips fall where they may. In other words, it wouldn't be a winner-take-all event.

On average, a 10-ball ring game should last 5 to 10 minutes and in 3 hours you should get in ~20 to 25 games. Out of 8 players, I'd expect that at least 3 would go broke in a $50 buy-in game. The best players will win some good cash.

A bigger issue... you'll need to change the order on a regular basis. I suggest changing it every 30 - 45 minutes. Grab the Ace through the eight out of a deck of cards and have the players blindly pick their ordered spot... it's a simple way when you have so many players.

Good luck... sounds like fun. ;)
