Advice on installing a tip

There are very few cue repair guys in my area that use a lathe...and none that I'd say were damn good!
There are hundreds of repair guys that deal with snooker and english pool cues, but they're 8-10mm tips with a brass ferrule. A friend of mine owns a joinery business I'm sure he has a lathe of some kind, hopefully I can use that to re tip...just hope I don't lose a finger!

Do it exactly the same way. But with a tip that is laminated and bigger, it is just a bit harder work.

Use a sharp knife

Use the shaft to pin the tip down hard on something like a block of soft wood. If you don't hold it down hard, you will risk it delaminating.

Don't try to carve of pieces that are too big - with a 8 - 10 mm Elk, you can start cutting right up to the tangent line straight away (if that makes any sense). With a 12 - 13 mm laminated, you will be struggling.

If it takes you more than 10 mins end to end, then get help because you are probably doing something wrong.

Concerning the glue to use--I have used the crazy glue and gell types for over 30 years with no problems. Every once i a while I would have one come off but not often. As long as you make sure both sides (the ferrule and glue side of tip) are flat you shouldn't have a problem. I use this little trick to make sure all is right before glueing the parts together. Sand the parts to be glued together as flat as possible then put the tip on the cue and hold up to a light sorce and see if while turning the tip and cue if you can see any daylight between the parts--if you do you need to keep going until there isn't any showing.
The glue I'm likeing the best these days is the Gorillia super glue--it isn't a gel as of yet--don't know if they make this in a gell product --but it has rubber reinforcement properties in the formulation that helps the glue absorb shock--this stuff is strong and tough and sets up in a short while.
I put the tips on with the above glue and hold the tip down on the cue while counting to 60 real slow--then put the shaft in one of the pockets of my table and let set for 1 hour--then start the trimming of the sides with my tip trimmer--Make sure you put some clear packaging tape around your ferrule to protect it when doing all of the above--want to keep it as clean as you can--no need for extra work later---Hope that helps
