Advise needed please!

Hi folks,
i need some advice please, i have recently tried to fit a white diamond tip onto my J/B cue, and three times it has come off after maybe a dozen break shots.

I have used a cue top sander to get the ferrule level and used super glue gel to fix it, i have cut both the tip and the top of the ferrule with a cross hatch pattern to try to provide a key for the glue but to no avail.

Any Ideas?? Oh and also i have left the tip the full size but they are quite hard to cut down, do i have to cut about a third off the tip first??

I am getting a bit frustrated with this, oh and there is nobody nearby who installs tips.

Hi Greg,

It sounds to me that you're doing everything right EXCEPT you need to trim off the overlap... This is almost certainly the problem (unless your SuperGlue has gone stale!)

I can PM you the address of a good tip mechanic with a lathe, but it WILL involve you posting your shaft to him mate!

Looks like the untrimmed portion is what is causing the tip to peel off. It's acting like a lever over the unsupported hanging tip part when you hit it, and eventually the glue would give out. If the tip fit flush, the force of the hit would go into the ferrule, not into the air. If you hit the ball dead center of the tip, you should be OK though :wink: .
 
Hi guys,

thanks for that but it is a 14mm jump shaft so it fits completely flush without the need to trim it, i am thinking that it is too deep that is what i meant by leaving the tip full size.

I dont think your glue is fresh enough. I dont think you would have to cut off any of the tip like you are saying. I havent messed with the WD tip yet so IDK for sure. If you cant get them to hold it may involve sending your shaft off to a cuesmith. I hope this helps.

Greg, its the side force from a miscue type hit that pops the tip off. Many will chime in that they have no problem keeping them on with Superglue gel....they have just been lucky so far. Its near impossible to get any hard material (non leather) to adhere to the ferrule with 100% confidence. Thats why when I make my canvas or white tips, I make them with a threaded stem that threads down into the ferrule. This stem keeps the tip on even during the worst miscue. You can even try to pop it off with pliars and it won't budge. Since you don't have this option available to you, the WD tips come with a flat back....then I'd recommend skipping the superglue & using Gorilla glue. Follow instructions (wet 1 side) and leave overnight with pressure for best results. This will be your best option. Second choice would be to mix up the 2 part JB Weld "Kwik" version and again leave with pressure overnight. These will indeed be your best 2 options but be prepared...without being threaded on....they will still very well indeed pop off at some point in time....especially with a miscue or awkward jacked up jump shot. Thanks very much for the advice, i will try that, i can assure you that all the times the tip has come off it has been from a very solid hit and in fact the last time the tip flew so far it hit one of the players at the next table in the back of the head LOLOL! I guess it is my installation that is at fault rather than a poor cue action haha.
