After ten years...

I finally bought a new cue. My girlfriend has been saying she wanted one, so I let her have my old one (meucci I got back in 95). I am well aware of the quality issues that meucci is having, so I opted out of buying another one. I sell cues so I decided to try a Joss and if I didn't like it I could probably sell it to someone else. Boy does it feel like a log compared to the meucci! Hitting a ball with it feels like hitting a brick. I am gonna give it a few months though and see how I like it. Anybody ever go from a whippy/small diameter stick to a stiff/larger diameter stick? Boy it feels strange.

The long haul

it's the best thing you can do for your game, it's not easy though, first off if your girlfriend is serious about getting better throw away the mucci and get her something stiff as well. In just under a year i have gone from a TS 12.25mm shaft (lots and lots of flex) to a Predator (lots and lots of no flex) 12.75mm. I had to work my way up from the TS, to a predator, back to a DP with 12.25mm shaft but stiffer than the TS, to a mace with 12.5mm which was stiffer than the DP, and back to the predator. At first there is no way to describe how much i hated the predator (gimmic shaft) but if you really get used to them it's phenomonal how well they play just have to have Patience. Take my advice and this time next year you'll be playing 3 balls better. Good luck!!

If your GF is serious about wanting to play pool, or even semi-serious, i would buy her a NEW cue first, something like a Action 81, which runs about 90$

And as for going from a Meucci to a Joss, yea it would be kinda a big difference. I went through two Meucci Originals, and both had 12mm shafts, and had lots of whip and squirt. Well when i got my Espiritu w/13mm shaft, it really didnt take me long to adjust to the shaft.

But it was nice to be able to hit the CB and have it go where i wanted lol.

If your Joss shaft is too thick, and want a thinner shaft, you could look into a 314shaft, and even though its thinner you'll still get a stiffer hit.

You might also take your Joss shaft down to 12.75 mm. I like the feel much better than the standard Joss shafts.

Do yourself a favor... sell the Joss and buy a nice used custom from an AZer or from Ebay. You will feel the difference and be much happier.

I hate to say it, but dump the Joss. You probably already know you've lost some finesse. If you know you don't like the cue already, just eject it. It's not right for you.

It's time for a nice basic custom, maybe a Scruggs or Phillipi something along those lines. You need a livelier cue.

Thats funny....I also just bought a new cue (picked it up yesterday)....decided to buy one, as I also have been playing 10 years!

My old one was a Joss by Brunswick, will now become my breaking stick.

My new one is a Viking, paid $500 for it. I'll be trying it out today at lunchtime. I tried a teammates Viking cue, I loved the way it felt & shot.

It really annoys me that when anyone mentions a Joss or another production cue the first thing people say is "get rid of it and buy a custom cue". I have shot with plenty of custom cues that don't play nearly as well as a Joss. For the money you can't go wrong with a Joss, Pechauer, or a Schon. You can get a Joss with points and some inlays for $300-500 or you can buy a similar custom for $2,000 and up. Most people don't have the money to spend on a custom cue that may only play marginally better.

4 times the cost does not equal 4 times better playing.

Tap, Tap.

I have shot with customs and prodcutions. A cue is a cue is a cue to me. I was just noting the difference in feel between the old cue and the new one. I read in a post somewhere that Blud himself said Joss Ltd. are the best production cues you can buy (he also drooled a little over Dan Janes' shop IIRC).

What model Viking did you get? I can spot a Viking from across the pool hall.

I have a Viking VM28 and love it. Paid $220 for it and I use it to shoot at my buddies house where lots of drinking goes on, and I would worry about about playing with my Samsara.

One thing about Viking; You might not hear anybody say the like a Viking, but I've never heard anybody say a bad thing about one.

Great value for your money as well.

It definitely takes some time to get used to a stiffer/harder hit. Give it a month or 2 and you might find yourself liking the joss a lot more.

I got a Viking F14. I had the purple & pearl colors reversed. I just tried it out at lunchtime & I loved it.........like it better than my ol' Joss. Hits alot softer too.

You can pick up a nice used custom on ebay for less than $1500... Tate is right and agrees with me.... Upgrade to a custom. Sometimes 4 times the cost does equal more than 4 times the value. I think this is one of those cases.

lol the guy asked about getting used to the stiffer hit of his joss and you come back and suggest he go out and blow $1500 on a custom cue he's never hit with before...on ebay.

Cornerman - are you reading this? This is the reason I started that thread about carelessly recommending customs.

I don't buy pool sticks or guitars used because you never know how well they have been taken care of...especially sight unseen. I know I can get used to the cue, I adjust quickly...was just curious if people changed from a whippy/soft hitting stick to a stiff/hard hitting stick. And yes, people on here do go overboard reccommending customs. Probably everyone would buy a custom if they could afford it, but I would have to eat ramen for a solid year
