Age of cue? Help!

J&J Cues wouldn't be able to help you with regards to learning more details about the cue, you'll need to contact TAD Custom Cues directly with the serial number (Phone: 714-995-1644). As for this cue, the bumper screw shouldn't be an allen screw. Allen screws are fine threaded and go often into a weight bolt, which this cue shouldn't have one. The bumper screw for this cue should be a very small phillips wood screw, very easy to strip.

With how the thread was earlier, I don't know if he's messing with you or trying to be sincere...

Attached picture taken from one of Timothy Song's posts to show as an example of the bumper screw.

mamono - Thank you sir, very pertinent info. "very small phillips wood screw, very easy to strip". This is precisely why I did not want to fool around with trying to remove the bumper and was hoping someone here could give me at least the range of years this model was made. Oh well, such is life. You have no idea how much I appreciate this info and ESPECIALLY the photo. Thanks again.

p.s. Regarding the "It's a Joss." I've no idea if he was serious or not either but, actually, the entertainment value of his comment came in at 3 1/2 stars! AND THANKS FOR TAD'S PHONE # !!!

I don't mean to push the issue, but there is no complex assembly to worry about disrupting: The butt cap isn't going to come off and there should be no weight bolt to worry about.

If you can turn a screw and dial a phone number, you can have your answer in a few minutes.

OK...now your messin with my action...he was gonna hand deliver the Tad for bumper surgery and let me play with it for a year or two!

Oh well, no great loss since it is now magically transformed into a Joss.

You know BS used to be here in Tulsa. From '74-'78 iirc. He made a lot of nice cues here. From the mid-70's thru the early 90's just about every good player around here had a JW. It was great being able to just go his shop for a tip or a wrap. Good times.

He had a REALLY nice sideways JW. I actually gave serious thought to buying it instead of the Tad. I've wanted a Tad for 45 years but I've also wanted a JW for almost that long as well. Someday I'ma gonna get me one!

Doc - Yeah, I was bubble-popped to a tiny degree when I found out it was a Joss. But like I said to Gar, heck... Tad, Adam, Viking, Joss... all pretty much the same once yer up to @ 400.00 or so, right? But, on the off chance it really *IS* a Tad, I'll still bring it over and you can keep it / play with it as long as you want, as long as I get it back in fairly good condition. Lemme know!

Anyone have any idea how old, specifically or approximately, this Tad is? Any help would be much appreciated.

TAD Hoppe style, has the logo on the Hoppe ring, window style joint
rings, probably has the date code under the bumper. Tad made one of
these for the Tad Cup tournament. I'm guessing early 90's on. I've seen
some earlier Hoppe style Tads with NO logo, and silver joint rings.

Thanks Runner. I'm going to pass on the info posted here with the photo about the screw being a phillips and see if my cuemaker friend wants to get the bumper off. Then I can call Fred K and see when it was actually made. I'm in no hurry, really. I just bought it Saturday. I have all the time in the world. Hopefully, though, I'll find out sooner than later.

Uh....Adam, Viking, Joss, all production cues. Tad, no, not that I ever heard.

How do you mistake a wood screw for an allen bolt?

TAD bumpers have a very small hole for the screw and the head of the screw sits very deep in the bumper. It’s difficult to see inside the hole without a flashlight. Honest mistake to think it might be an allen screw based due to how small the hole is on the bumper, IMHO. My advice, once you start to loosen the bumper screw, just turn the bumper to further loosen to prevent stripping the screw as the screw is snug in the bumper anyways.
