I need some suggestions on how to help my wife aim her shots.

If you get her to line up a shot and then look straight down the cue from behind she swears she aiming center but the cue tip is about 3/4 to the right of center. So therefore on a shot that looks like she aiming right it will hit just to the left of the pocket about 50% of the time, esp. if its a long shot she misses it further to the left than she should.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Ghoust is she a bad player? Does she miss balls all of the time? let her keep playing this way and if she does not improve then change her style. if she has any talent for the game she can learn to adjust on her own.

Put three pennys close to the edge on the foot rail about 3/4 of an inch apart. Have her shoot at the one in the middle from behind the head string. One will fly off. Have her keep trying until she flips the one in the middle off the table.
Take a golf ball, mark a small black dot on it. Put it in the middle of the foot rail on the table. Have her line the cue up so it is pointing at the dot, from her shooting position from the other end of the table. Have her set the cue down where it is, ( be up enough so it won't hit the floor ), than have her get down and see if it is pointing at the dot. This will show her how much her perceived aim is compared to what actually is. Have her try it until she gets it right.

Tell her she can't ever go shopping again until she gets it right! If I did that to my wife, she'd have it figured out on her own in about 10 minutes!!!

Seriously, I tend to agree with JC. Put a piece of chalk on a rail and have her shoot at the chalk or put a line on the rail and have her shoot at that. Then, have her change her line over the ball until she starts hitting the target consistently. It could be her stance too. Get in front of her and look down the line of her cue stick and see if it looks straight to you.

the drill don mentioned, along with another, which i'll describe, have been helping me. they've been a part of each warm up when i get to a table. i'm pretty good at popping those pennies once i'm warmed up. I am supposed to be hitting all of em in one stroke, right ;)

the other one he taught me is to aim a ball (any ball) cross table from one corner to another, close your eyes, stroke, and shoot. helps get my muscle memory woken up or something... i'm getting so i can make some object ball shots that way. i took a few last night and only missed one, and that was due to a friend joking with someone that i fell asleep midshot and making me crack up.

Here are two things that will help improve your stroke...

1: Take a stripe ball and put it on the foot spot. Make sure the stripe is straight up and down. Hit the stripe ball straight up the table. Don't use center ball. Use a little follow - maybe 1 tip. If it hit exactly in the center (no left or right english), the ball will roll along the stripe. If you hit it very slightly off center, you will see the stripe 'wiggle' as the ball rolls. If you hit it a little more off center, you won't even be able to see the stripe as it rolls. Try this and you will see what I am talking about.

2: Stand along the long rail and make a bridge on the rail. Bend over the cue stick and look down. There is a line on the rail where the felt on the cushion meets the wood on the table. This is a straight line. Make sure your cue stick completely covers this line. You should not be able to see it. Start to take practice strokes. As you do, keep looking down. If you see the line appear at any time, your stroke is gooing from side to side, which is no good. If your stroke is straight, you will continue to cover this line. By the way, the same thing can be done with a beer or coke bottle. Empty it and place it on its side on the table. Stroke the cue stick into and out of the open bottle. You should be able to do this without contacting the sides of the bottle.

Good luck.

FL RESPONDS, HERE IS MY ADVICE ON THIS, only teach your wife to make love. Never try and teach her how to drive a car or play pool. Send her to me for that and pay for the lesson. :D
