Al Romero SP

I just got an SP from "Little Al" Romero. It's a true Sneaky--no butt cap or joint collars--and, in line with my request, there's nothing fancy about the butt wood (which I can't identify)--it even appears to be plugged in one or two places. But the splices are clean and sharp and I have to tell you that I don't think I've ever played a cue with a better balance and hit, including my cherished Benders. It came with two shafts and joint protectors (unfinished, admittedly) for a whopping $200.00. I can't imagine a better deal anywhere, and if you're willing to spend a little more I'm sure he will be glad to improve the cosmetics. As it is, I have one sweet playing cue that wouldn't draw attention to itself even in the dumpiest room. Now if only I had the skills to be a hustler....

Was it made from an old Valley or an old Dufferin (if you don't mind me asking)..? I'm always curious to see pictures if you got 'em. :D

I used to own one and have hit with 3 of them; all of them hit great. They might not be the prettiest cues around, but with the way they hit, I guess it doesn't matter. The 3 I've seen so far seem to have been handspliced, but that is not to say that Romero doesn't use Valley or Dufferin butts.

I'm surprised you said you paid what you did. Al's sneakys with 1 shaft are 200.00. The joint protectors and additional shaft would add at least another 100.00 to the cue. You must have caught him in a really generous mood! Al's sneakys are very solid--he really does a good job with them. There's a 95% chance your cue is made from an American Valley supreme.

At this price I assume he didn't do his own splice, yet the points are cleaner and sharper than the Valley Supremes (or Dufferins) I've seen. I think he may have thrown in the extra shaft and the JPs (which are admittedly no thing of beauty) because the cue took a lot longer than he predicted.
