Alcohol for shafts

I use isopropyl and yes, it contains water (all alcohol is hydroscopic, and it all has water in it).

Get the 90+% version, not the 70% crap.

Note that as soon as you open it, it begins absorbing more water, and losing more alcohol at the same time, so start as high as you can!

If you can get it, lab supply places often sell reagent grade which goes higher than 91% (but it suffers from the same problems once opened!)

PS you can also use grain alcohol (if your state allows it) make sure it is 180 proof or higher.

EDIT: PPS if you are thinking about using it on a vintage cue, make sure it is not shellac before you use alcohol on it! Alcohol will strip schallec right off!

Hey Jim, I have a bottle that I brought back in my travels. Its pretty scary but I believe I won't be getting my shafts looped. Such a waste.
PS - We can't seem to get Denatured in Canada so I use 99% Isopropyl. I use it liberally on a Magic Eraser and any residue left is wiped quickly with a clean towel.

Well, Blue, I didn't say to use ALL of it on the shaft... After a few sips the shaft looks cleaner even before application to the shaft!
