Decided it was time to change out the anti Backlash nuts on my Align Rite. I contacted Align Rite and they did not help at all. The anti backlash nuts on the X and Y axis appear to be the same. I'm sure if I do more research on it I can find them myself, but I'm just trying to save myself some time. Thanks in advance!

Steve, i cant believe those nuts would already be worn out....your gonna need to find a way to protect those from all the dust. Kerks are badass but, they have so much pressure that when dust gets in there it acts like sandpaper.

Steve,

I was having problems with my x indexing properly on jobs using the rotary output and I could see the X nut was not working properly. When I tried to compensate the backlash in Mach Mill 3 the wear was so bad it did not fix the problem.

I changed out both my X and Y and my problem was solved.

I have a different nut than you show here and my lead screw is different. I got my replacements from Unique. You might want to call Jerry Powers @ 325-793-9500. If anyone would know where to get the parts, he would.

Rick

They are kerk nuts and should run about 50-75 a piece you can also try to wind the spring a little tighter to see if they have a little more left in them the cog at the top will pull down and disengage the spring then just wind it about a half to full turn more kerk can give you the directions as you will need them if you want to put new nuts in anyway

It was my fault for not doing a little maintenance and not having a good dust collector set up for years. The bearings on the Y Axis got loaded up with dirt to the point it could barely move. I think that contributed to the Anti Backlash nut wearing out.

Rick, This is Jerry Powers old Align Rite. I gave him a call and he referred me to Align Rite. Jerry is a great guy and has helped me out tons! I bought the machine from him around 8 years ago and wouldn't expect him to remember all of the specs on it.

Travis, I tried turned them, looks like they are maxed out.

Thanks for all of the responses. Off to order some parts!

Steve,
If Travis's method of cogging doesn't work. Try going directly to
Kerk. I have them on my old Blud machine and when I had to replace one of them, I ended up sending the old nut to them and they figured out which one I needed. I had a double start which had me totaly baffled.
Like someone else said, I'm really amazed it's worn out. May have had too much preload on it.

Steve, Thanks for the reply. Contacting Kerk is probably my best bet. The ball bearings were so loaded up with dust that I could barely move it by hand. I'm sure that wasn't good for the life of the nut. Double start? You may as well be speaking French!:)

Steve, Kerk is absolutely the way to go. I have got them on my K2 that I got from Travis and they are really nice! Jake is right you must keep them clean because they are tight. I blow them off with air pressure constantly.

No ball bearings in there. Just delrin or something like that. That's the great part about them and at the same time, it's one of their weaknesses.
Much less efficient than ballscrews, but way less expensive. Perfect for
our applications in most cases.

Steve, I don't think I explained it well enough. What had gotten blocked up was the 4 bearing blocks that the Y Axis travels on and is below the bed. That put a lot of stress on the Anti Backlash nut. Hopefully I'll figure out what I need and get them ordered today.

Oh yeah, that will eat the nut in a hurry. I put a shot of white lithium
grease in mine about every 3 months. Not sure what yours calls for, but
mine are thompsons. They also make a wiper to help keep the crap out.

Hey Steve and Steve,

I switched to this product and I love the way it performs on my saw machines linear track also. Under $20.00.

Good Cue Making,

Here is it's description. This stuff is not snake oil it works good.

COMPETITIVE SAILORS FROM THE AMERICA'S CUP™ TO OPTIS ARE USING SAILKOTE™ TO MAXIMIZE THEIR PERFORMANCE AND GET AROUND THE COURSE SMOOTHER AND EASIER!
Sailkote is the easy to apply high-tech, high performance dry lubricant that makes sails, hulls, rigging, deck hardware, and anything that moves on your boat run smoother, work more efficiently and last longer than you ever thought possible.

Team McLube Sailkote is the only dry lubricant currently available that has been specifically designed for marine use. Sailkote is a translucent liquid that sprays or wipes on and completely dries in seconds. So, unlike oils, silicones, and waxes, it will never attract dirt, water and contaminants that eventually degrade lubrication performance.

“World class” sailors across the globe from maxi-racers to sailboarders are enjoying the benefits of Sailkote's advanced dry lubrication technology. The same dry lubricant technology that has been developed for, and race proven by America's Cup Teams, Olympics Medalists, and One Design World Champions.

Discover the difference Sailkote can make in your sailing performance and enjoyment. Examine the cruising and racing applications pages for complete application information and important performance enhancement tips. Just as the sailors of nearly every America's Cup syndicate have discovered, no boat should be sailing without the benefit of Sailkote.

It dries quickly to a hard, smooth, ultra-slick, hydrophobic dry coating that bonds tenaciously to almost any surface. And because Sailkote is a dry lubricant, it will not attract dirt or contaminants and will not transfer to other surfaces, or you.

Sailkote is typically five times as effective, and lasts much longer than, wax, oil or Teflon® based lubricants.

Thanks Rick, I sent the Anti Backlash nut out yesterday for replacements. Got plenty to do around the shop until it gets back.
