I will get more arguments from this statement than I could reply to, so let me start out by saying this is just an opinion. Old vs. new or not, I think Efren is the best player in the world and should win this tournament. If you want to go as an all around player, playing every game, I would be willing to lose my whole paycheck betting on Efren. Like I said this is just an opinion. The only bad thing is probaly the next best two in the world is Bustamante and pagulayan so anyone can win this, but my money is on Efren.

Still the money man but not as dominating as in years past

Efren must be really glad (or "lucky" as he's fond of saying) to get past Ralf Souquet on this one. DCC, Japan, US Open, what else? On the other hand, didn't Souquet mentioned sometime that he just couldn't win over Bustamante.

8-ball is a game that requires a higher percentage of strategic talent than just mere pocketing skills and this is where Efren particularly shines. A proof of this is in the scorelines: He won vs ortman 10-3, vs soquet 10-6, vs chamat 10-5, vs bustamante 10-4.

8-ball is where you'll get to win more through your skills rather than by luck (unlike 9-ball) and this is really where the better player almost always wins. Around 2 years ago I heard Efren said in an interview that 8-ball is one of his favorites and he has shown us why by winning 3 world 8-ball titles and now on the verge of winning his 4th. If for some reason he doesnt take home the bacon, we'll be just as happy for Marlon, where a victory here is a guaranteed breakthrough for him. He'll be the next superstar of pool if he takes this one.

I totally agree with you here... :)

I read somewhere before that Efren said he's best game is really 8-ball rather than 9-ball... simply because the 'luck' element doesn't factor in too much (well at least not as much as it does in 9-ball)... i'm just saddened by the fact that a World 8-ball Title doesn't give that much credit to a player anymore today compared to a World 9-ball Title... probably for the simple reason that 9-ball is more popular i guess...

btw, earl holds the record for most World 9-ball titles at 3, does efren have it for 8-ball (at 3)?

In the 8-ball pro tournaments, do players have to call their shot/pocket? Also, if they make the 8 on the break, do they win?

Hello Jay,

As far as who is the best all around player is concern is not the question here. In fact this question has been answered by and by many times here before on many threads. And to tell you frankly it is always Efren who comes out who has the best all around play. As far as being old is concerned, im glad
that i qualified it with other adjectives 'old reliables'. And more so not just
long ago Efren admitted that he only got 5 more years or least left in
his pool machine body, that's why young guns filipino has to step up
right now. And Bustamante is not that young too you know. And if you
look at other nations playing pool right now its getting younger, if
you look at the Taiwan right now, they have even a young phenom
there in the person of Wu Chia Ching and he is only 15 years old. And
he already beats on the likes of Chin Shun Yang and Hu Kui Hsia. So
the question of age for Efren is whether you like it or not is inevitably
coming and that's a hard eyes of reality that we have to look at. ;)
So saying that his Oldness is an opinion is an escape from reality. Even
Michael Jordan the greatest basketball player has to admit you know.
He's not the same young Michael Jordan as he is. Yup he could still score but
father time has already caught up with him. And its quiet a little hard pill
to swallow for him, bcoz it took him the third time to really look at it in
the eye.

Opinion ? yap everybody has his own opinion. :D

I agree with you on this one Sonny. Luck here is less likely here compared
to 9 balls and hence skills have to take one level notch higher.

Additionally i would like to add also that 8 ball is much closer to much
preferred format by filipinos, that is, rotation. It has also 15 balls on
and it is even more difficult coz you have to shoot it in sequence.
Of course you should have known this coz you're filipino yourself. :D
So seeing all filipino on the Semi-final is not a surprise here if you
concur with this observation.

Were there any USA players in this tourney?

I heard that there is a tourney there in US who is simutaneously held in
terms of schedule so they back off by reason of conflict of schedule.
But i also heard that, more than that , the reason of security is considered.
Considering this is held on UAE which is in the Middle East and hey
though this is more democratic and open compared to other Middle Eastern
countries, they just wont take the chances or risk their lives on this regard.

So yes no USA player unfortunately on this tournament. :)

Wow, Efren has a shot at his 4th World 8-Ball.
I remember Efren beating Carter, Wetch and Mika on 3 separate world 8-ball at the Riviera. He did lose one final match to Danny Medina one year.
Earl won it once when Efren and Bustamante weren't able to go due to the Asian Games.
You put 15 balls on the table, Efren's brilliance comes out.
Efren loves 8-ball.

Is it televised in Atlanta? How did you get it? Oh well, I just went to WPA site, Efren won, 11-8 against someone named Manalo. Who is? New player?

That's Marlon Manalo, the new Filipino sensation who in the last World 9-Ball Championships in Taiwan beat 3 heaveweights - Yang, Bustamante and Efren - in 3 successive days.
