All Japan Championship

I have been trying to compete the winner's for the "All Japan Championship" tournament for a while and I came to a stand still. I am struggling to find any further information about the winner's of the tournament pre 1991. Any would be greatly appreciated.

Here are 1989 1990

1990: Efren Reyes (over Earl Strickland)
1989: Akikumo Toshikawa over Ernesto Dominguez

I'm very hard pressed to believe that there was a nine-ball event prior to 1976, which was the year of the first US Open 9-ball. I've always labeled the recent eras of our sport as follows:

up to 1976: straight pool era
1976-83: straight pool and nine ball shared the stage
1984-present: nine ball era

This clipping is from the December 21, 1987 issue of the York, PA Dispatch. Third paragraph says Hopkins had just won the 14.1 and rotation events in Osaka.

Very true, good point.

Kazuo Fujima the founder of the tournament and was one of the founding members of the WPA, went to America in 1967 and competed in the World Straight Pool Championship, although he finished last it encouraged him to incorporate it in to the tournament, were before it was only call shot Rotation being played in Japan.

Well done!

I didn't see this thread first time, but the following book has some lists of Japanese national champions, going quite a long way back. I think they're all various forms of billiards rather than pool (if I remember correctly). I just had a look for the copy I have but I couldn't find it. I can try again if you're interested.
