I have no doubt that was the lion's share of the change. The change in reasonance was what surprised me. The pitch of the hit was different...As to the entirety of the why, I have no idea.

I’ve noticed, screwing around with my own designs, that swapping one pin for an identical pin in the same butt can change the feel. There are tons of variables, including refacing of the joint during install, the installation of inserts or plugs for the new pin, differences in how the epoxy bonds or how much is used, etc.
I don’t think any of this matters and perhaps it’s all psychosomatic. And as noted by Joey above, there have been plenty of blind tests where good players couldn’t identify the difference in pin types used in cues.
