Aluminum radial pin?

I have no doubt that was the lion's share of the change. The change in reasonance was what surprised me. The pitch of the hit was different...As to the entirety of the why, I have no idea.
I'm just relating my own anecdotal experience.

I’ve noticed, screwing around with my own designs, that swapping one pin for an identical pin in the same butt can change the feel. There are tons of variables, including refacing of the joint during install, the installation of inserts or plugs for the new pin, differences in how the epoxy bonds or how much is used, etc.

I don’t think any of this matters and perhaps it’s all psychosomatic. And as noted by Joey above, there have been plenty of blind tests where good players couldn’t identify the difference in pin types used in cues.

No particular disagreement. In my case, it wasn't just a switch from a stainless 3/8x10 to a stainless 5/16x14. It was a stainless 3/8X10 to G10 3/8X10. Could have certainly been the weight and balance point shift, but the cue absolutely pleasantly "sounded" different to me, after the change.
I can't say that the pin material made any difference, but I wouldn't necessarily rule it out either.
Just my own personal observation.

10000% certain. Aluminum to wood turns black real fast. It will start to look like black chrome after a very very long time as more metal transfer's to the wood. The tighter the pin the faster this happens. <——not speculation, I’ve had a few cues with aluminum pins decades ago.
Are there any negative side effects besides just a change in color?

That's why I like the anodized ones, they don't transfer aluminum to the shaft

That’s a great idea. I hadn’t thought of that.

Seems to me this is perfect for aluminum pins. There’s no reason not to use them in this case.

What ever feels good to a player is most important. 2nd is how long something lasts, looks are the least important thing.

I prefer Ti Radial or 3/8-10 Modified pins. They are about 10g heavier, but still on the lighter side, but you don't sacrifice strength as with aluminum pins..
