JB Case and Amazing artwork

and the 2x3 of my dreams. I started talking to John Barton about building a case for me about 6 years ago and he tells me, I just sold Instroke. Then JB Cases started about a year ago and we started back on the subject. Turns out his artist, used to be a tattoo artist, and I sent some pictures, and we talked design, and it all got lost in a puter crash. :D Everything but the design and this amazing artwork. Many many thanks to John, and to Lee Zhen Hai. John naturally signed on the top, and Lee on the bottom. What a piece of art. I am still trying to figure out how the shafts pop up when the case opens ..... amazing ...

Leather, interior, fittings, stitching ..... all super. Soon as the meds wear off I may post more :D

there are 4 "oni's" ( demons) on the case including one coming out from under one of the pockets ... I don't know what to call the engraver/tooler/artist but he is a real craftsman in my humble opinion .... :D

the meds have not worn off nor has the cold so this case hasn't made it out of the house, nor have I.

When the case came in John had just sent me the tracking number and told me it was on the truck. When I got it unwrapped, I sat there just looking at it for awhile before I emailed John to let him know it had arrived. The only thing I could think of at the time to say was

F**KING AMAZING!!!!!!!

Ok, Now I can say something.

First, thank you Doc for the opportunity to build this case for you. It ended up being far more than we initially discussed but not any less than it needs to be considering our many conversations. You know what I mean.

A pool cue case gives a lot of room for expression. Unlike a cue the case can take on many forms as long as fulfills the basic function of protecting and transporting the cue.

This is one of them that really embodies that spirit of expression. I am not going to get into the literal and figurative aspects of this case design except to say that it represents much more than some artwork tooled onto leather.

I don't even want to really get into the technical aspects of this case either except to say that it's truly a fusion of technology and traditional leather work. The amount of time it took to think up, design and cut just the handle and strap ring parts was almost a week. So for those of you that think CNC is plug and play I say try it sometime and you will go through a lot of trial and error first.

From the hand working side of things it took two people several days to completely lace the seam. Most of the stitching is done by hand. And all of the tooling was done by hand. My signature was done by laser and Zhen Hai Lee's was hand carved.

I guess what I want to say is that in my career as a case maker I have seldom made a case that means so much. I mean I have put people's wishes on cases, and made them cases with the pockets they want and so on. But a case like this where the final result is due to years of conversation, depth of experience, and pain is something transcendent. To me at least.

It was a true privilege to be given the freedom to make this case as I envisioned it. All of us at JB Cases are proud to have created it and that truly comes from all of us.

Just call him an artist. The case starts with our concepts and from there we do several drawings to get the feel.

Generally it's me who drives the concept portion of the design. Then when the artist presents me with several versions I pick one and we go from there. A lot of times ideas will come during the construction phase and they will be implemented immediately.

Everyone on the team has input in what and how to do all aspects of the case. Even though Zhen Hai is the resident expert tooler he has also taken good suggestions from our new apprentice as well.

The thing that brings us all together is a desire to learn and get better. Everyone that works on the JB Cases is always looking for a better, cleaner, and cooler way to make it.

Fittingly enough I think, last night I watched an episode of American Chopper where the theme was fabrication and design and how much they need to go hand in hand for true custom work. The designer cannot be a keyboard warrior and know that the stuff he draws will work unless he gets in the shop and tries it.

Zhen Hai knows what I expect now when it comes to what goes on a case. He knows that the detail is where it's at. I am very proud of the artwork he creates "on demand".

I've been looking at it for several days cowboy and you're right, and it keeps on wow'in me. like I said .... amazing .....
