Amazing safety sequence from snooker WC

Well, I could have sworn some of the commentators were putting in an L sound. As for us 'Mericuns, we spell it balk and pronounce it bawk, as in the game of balkline which few here play now and perhaps no Englishman has ever seen. More commonly here the word appears in baseball where a balk is a kind of foul.

Yes sorry balk not bauk (edited in original post in bold). Probably then spelled that way simply for the usual efficiency. Maybe you are right - maybe some of the commentators are still pronouncing the L - but only just a bit, I've never noticed it.

Here is another remarkable sequence involving the "foul and a miss" rule. If you fail to hit the right ball, you can be forced to play the same shot again. The limit is that if you are so far behind you need snookers to win the frame, you can only be forced to shoot from where the balls land after the foul.

In pool it is absolutely forbidden to play an intentional miscue. It is not a permitted stroke.

I wonder if the snooker players know about the lift trick.

I watched the clip and when the commentators called for the deliberate miscue it looked like what I would call a good shot. The touch was so soft, I did not see a double hit or prolonged contact.

But he was cueing with part of the tip outside the ball. Actually, I think the technique is to have most of the tip outside the ball to reduce the force and make sure the cue ball goes nearly perpendicular to the cue.

Yep when I watched that sequence it was a bit mesmerizing watching Higgins technique.
Watching Selby stall for 3 to 4 minutes to promote stalemate was rubbish and he lost some respect there.

Mr. Jewett, do you know if this miscue technique can be done without committing a foul ? I was under the impression that Higgins first attempt was almost perfect, but the ref called it a miss and didn't see the red move.

I believe the shot is permitted providing that the object ball is moved by the cue ball. Of course there are many ways for it to be a foul, including not getting to the object ball (which I think was Higgins' problem) and the cue ball rocking back and contacting the ferrule.

For this shot I think it would help to have a very mushroomed tip which some snooker players favor (or maybe favour).

listen to the shot when he banks the ball. it sounds like a double hit.
(about Higgins' shot after the potty break)
The path of the cue ball looked OK. It would have been nice if they had shown a slo-mo of it, though.
