QUALIFICATION SYSTEM FOR 2006 WPA WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIP

The purpose of this category system is to give all serious pool players in the world, the opportunity to compete in the World Pool Championship.
This system has been devised using professional golf tours as a model and it is a system that rewards achievement and ability.
Wherever possible, emerging pool nations have been accommodated to give the event the geographical spread it has enjoyed in past years.
There are a couple of major difference between this system and past years when a straightforward quota has been awarded to various continental associations.
The first is that this system is cross-bordered. That means that players from anywhere in the world can compete in events in other territories and qualify for the final stages of the World Pool Championship.
For example, if an American national decided to enter a Euro Tour event and was to win or come second, then that would give him a spot in the final 128. By the same token, if a European player won or came second in a UPA event in the US, then that too would gain him entrance.
The second major difference is that countries and or continents do not have a set allocation of players. This comes with rewarding success and achievement.

The first three categories are general and applicable to the six areas of Europe, Asia, North America, Oceania, Africa and Developing Pool Nations.
Categories 4 and upwards are different in each territory.
Players will always take their position from the HIGHER category. For example; Alex Pagulayan would enter the 2006 World Pool Championship as a Category 1 player, due to him winning the event in 2004.
However, Alex would also fall into several other categories due to his achievements around the world over the past 12 months.
The fact that he is a Category 1 player DOES NOT free up spots to other players in the other categories he could qualify under. Be aware of this as it is a basic principle of this system.

Categories 1 – 3

Category 1
Previous five winners of the WPA World Pool Championship (in 2006 that would be Wu CC, A Pagulayan, T Hohmann, E Strickland, M Immonen)

What equipment will they be playing on for the WPC?

I think they will be using the Brunswick Metro similar to the one's used at all Matchroom events.

I, also, thought Scotland had 2 players in last year, Pat and Valentine?
Scotland get one place only at the World Championship Scott.

Michael won the qualifier last year defeating Jayson Shaw 10-9 in final.

I won the qualifier this year and in 2004 (Taipei).

Michael qualified for Taipei in 2004 by being No3 ranked in Pro9 UK Tour and they have since changed the qualification system, so thats where the confusion lies.

John Schmidt didn't make it?

Next year he is qualified. I think it has something to do with the cutoff date to win 48+ field tournament/major title which was May 15th.

2006worldpool.com is now back up. We had some difficulties over the past couple of days due to the storm.

The selection process will be announced officially by matchroom once they open their website. You can check out the official player list here: http://www.2006worldpool.com/Players.htm

No official word yet, but John Schmidt will most likely have a slot for next year. The selections were finalized around late September just before the start of the US Open.

Official Equipment: The Brunswick Metro Tournament Edition. Super Aramith Pro TV (with the pink 4 and 12). Simonis 860.

I know

the crowds (railbirds) were good last year, but how many spectators are they expecting in Manila?

I thought Parica was older than Efren by a couple of years...but on the site it says Parica 1957 and Efren 1954? is this correct?

Parica

So no female player is good enough for WPC?

Nostroke said:
It's the Men's Championship-Women ineligible.

That would be correct, I remember hearing somewhere that a female players showed up at a qualifier several years back but was ineligible to compete.

I played at the qualifier in Bristol, 2001 and there were 2 women playing there. I think one was from Denmark and I don't remember the other one.

Hohmann had to play the qualifier and got the job done on the first day.

Anita Rizzuti who I think is from Norway played in the WPC qualifiers.

I think the organizers may have since changed the rules allowing women to participate in the qualifiers.

As I have said before I think women should be allowed to enter a qualifier and if they win a spot in the main tournament they deserve to play.
