American thoughts on who IS or WAS the best Canadian player

I'm Canadian but I honestly don't think any of them made enough noise to get noticed. Just my 2 cents. Did any make the final 16 or 32 for that matter?

Can we throw Alex into the Phillipines category to make it a little harder?

Best Canadian player right now, in my eyes, Jason Klatt. John Morra a close second, I know he is in the spotlight a little more but Ive always been impressed with Jasons game. Its a toss up from there. Erik, Edwin, Tyler, Luc, Alain, etc.

Ever? I really have no idea? Maybe Cliff?

How about WORST Canadian player? Me! Everyone feel free to give me a HUGE spot.
 
John Horsfall, best ever easily that I've seen. Tremendous talent, though I'm not sure where he went, or what he did with it.

I think Ive seen the name kicking around in the area, dont think he's up there with the young guns though.

Erik MAY be the only person on the planet who can spell his last name. I know it starts with Hjor. Hjorleifson? haha. Good guy, SUPER tall.
 
Thorburn's pretty clearly the best ever. Chenier is a name that deserves consideration as well. There's no one on the scene nowadays (except for Alex) who is as big a star as Cliff or George were in their respective eras.

Agree. I've seen a video of Thorburn running 147 in Snooker. Very impressive.
 
Stories about Chenier

I used to hear lots of stories about Chenier and the pool and snooker halls in Canada from a guy by the name of Canadian Ross (Ross Nichols) who has since passed. I think he considered some of Chenier's feats the best of all time for a Canadian through the early to mid 80s anyway.

1948-1970 - North American Snooker Champion
1950 - Second Place, World Championships
1963 - World Pocket Billiard championship title
- Ran the first ever perfect game of 150, beating reigning world champion at the time.
- Ran 144 in a world tournament, the longest run ever from a break.

If we're not allowed to include Alex P., I would have to name John Horsfall as the best Canadian player I've ever seen.

I saw a match between John and Frankie Hernandez from the US Open '04 (I think)...John was behind something like 9-4 or 9-3. and came back to win 11-9...One of the best comebacks I've ever witnessed.
 
Cliff Thorburn for sure.

How's Danny Hewitt playing these days? I remember seeing him win that 10 ball event in Atlantic City in 2002 or 2003. He looked really strong there but I haven't even heard his name since then.

Isn't Ronnie Wiseman Canadian? I'd like to see anyone bet anything with him. Alain Martel wasn't too shabby in his heyday either. Thorburn takes the cake tho...
 
Cliff Thorburn, but I've heard alot of great things about Paul Thornley. Maybe someone here could shed some more light on that one...

I've met Paul and seen him play. Very good when I saw him but not great, by any means. We spent some time talking about Backgammon being played in his room, still big in Canada at that time. I haven't seen him or heard of him in years.
 
Ok, my picks past, present, future, pool and snooker.

Snooker - 1st Cliff, 2nd Kirk Stevens Present - Alain R Future - the guy still playing

pool - Gerry W, present - Alain M (just won everything at Canadians and finished 4th or something at worlds a few years ago)... If Edwin M played he would prob be best. Future - Jason Klatt (if he starts playing faster). I think John has more talent but doesn't have the focus on pool that Klatt has. I don't know these guys just basing it on who shows for events and matches.
 
As for "is" I think the nod has to go to Alain Martel. He has be one if not the top player in Canada for a long time. Its a shame he doesnt try the US Open but Ive heard he feels the expenses to go are too much. Plus I dont think he speaks much english.

I think Klatt and Johnny are a close second, and closing.


I think all time would go to Thornburn just cause he's the most recognized name in Canadian pool.
 
Id have to vote Brittany Bryant for top female, top 40 in the WPBA last I checked.

Swept the Canadians in the womens division.
