Amsterdam Billiards (NYC)

wendy we need an answer LOL

so far I see that they do have scheduled tournaments for the Tristate-tour throughout the rest of the winter til february, however, I don't know if that has anything to coincide with the moving of the pool room.....Hey Wendy....got an answer for us here?

No answer. All I know is that supposedly they were opening in November where Corner Billiards used to be (11th St., corner of 4th Ave.) I never really knew exactly when they were going to close their doors.

The current projection is that the new Amsterdam Billiard Club will open in mid-December.

The are tearing down all the buildings on the block and putting up condos...

Ugh.

That was a great room/location, I hope the new place is as nice.

i heard they're stalled on liquor license issues. they have to reapply because the old license doesn't apply to the new location. i'm sure it was cleaned up, but that's the last i heard.

Last I heard (Thursday), the club will be moving to the old Corner Billiards location sometime in January. I don't know the issues involving the Liquor License other than the fact that the room's original entrance is within 500 feet of a school. To circumvent this technicality, the original Corner Billiards' management used the side-entrace as their main-entrance.

I understand because of the columns, there is very little Amsterdam can do in terms of rearranging the tables. The layout will be very similar to the original one and I believe the bar will remain intact.

Amsterdam is moving because the block is being torn-down. The parking-garage also located on the block is now applying to become a landmark building which is a very interesting development. I don't know if/how this will affect Amsterdam Billiards' plans but as is always the case, time will tell. I do think it's amusing that they've put-up scaffolding and began renovations!

Anybody know Mark from New York? A tall, thin quiet youngster who shoots pretty good?

Jake

Yeah, that's Marco Vidal. He goes by the nickname "Spain" in New York, for obvious reasons. Strong 9-ball player, becoming a better one pocket player. When he's in NYC he plays at Master Billiards in Queens. He's been on the road a lot in the past year, especially in Pittsburgh.

Although his name is Mark and quite tall, I eliminated Gypsy rather quickly.

So where are the serious players hanging out in NYC?

Masters. SoHo. Those are the two rooms I'm always hearing.

Last week's Tri-State at ABC they announce that the room was slated to close in December. Sounds like a done deal on the closing regardless.

Not sure if the new room will be ready by then - last time I walked by there wasn't any activity in the old Corner's spot.

Shame to see a great pool room having to close.
I did a lot of work for Brenner when they first opened including building an all acrylic pool table that was in the private room in the back. There was an article in June 1990 Billiards Digest about the table.

I was at the grand opening private party, Jean Balukas was playing Pete Margo in the private room with about 30 people crammed in there watching the match.
Two guys in motorcylce jackets like Fonzie or Sha-Na-Na come in and squeeze in next to me, after watching Jean shoot a couple of shots one of the 1950s throwbacks says "whose this f**king c**t who thinks she can shoot pool" and he says it loud enough that everyone in the room could hear him.
Dave Klotsky the house man is standing on the other side of me and I turned to him and asked him who the a$$hole is - it was Andrew Dice Clay - I had never seen him prior to that night.

That's a great story. :D Dice was a legend in his own right but nowhere near to comedy what Jean was to the game.

I know SoHo billiards - a bit of a pit. Where is masters?

Ah, for the old days of Chelsea billiards...

SoHo sucks, and doesn't have any players. The tables all roll off, and the prices aren't cheap -- I don't see a reason to go there.
