Amsterdams all day table rental, is it fare to all it's other customers and are you loosing money by having a table rented that way? it appears to me that when certain people rent the table by the day they seem to have it open to all of there friends who want to play, so what i'm saying is, Do you think your loosing money from that table!, Also what about the other customers that come in to shoot for about 2 hrs.or so, ( 1 player ) and having to pay half of what that table you rented for the day so that every Tom,Dick and Harry can play for FREE and maybe have that table donated to them before the days end, so IMO your loosing money! and I'm sure other customers see what I see ( others playing for free ) is it FARE, Do the owners like it? What's up!

YOU KNOW TOM,DICK AND HARRY WOULD BE PAYING TO PLAY!, IMO

Why would you think the owners offer all day table rentals if they didn't like it? If they didn't think it was a good idea, they wouldn't do it, right?

YOU may not like it, but your opinion doesn't matter since you don't own the tables and pay the overhead for the pool room.

Instead of *****ing about what sounds like a great offer by Amsterdam, why don't you hook up with a few players to split the cost and rent your own table for a day?

From a business standpoint, I wonder if there is a poolroom anywhere run as masterfully as the Amsterdam Billiard Club West. What’s amazing, though, is that the policies of the club also ensure great access to all pool players.

The deal, which, as you note, is one of the best deals going in pool at $29 for the table from noon to six, is available when the room isn’t that crowded. This deal, called the “power play,” makes pool accessible to many who might otherwise lack the means to play in such an elegant, upscale, poolroom. I’m sure the minor abuses of that system have a very minimal financial impact on operating profits.

Amsterdam Billiard Club, through its policies, also does other things to ensure affordable access to its magnificent room. The thousands of league players, who each pay $12 a week as their league fees, on their designated league night, are permitted to practice for free from 6 – 9 PM on Friday and Saturday night, so even those of limited means have an opportunity to stay sharp.

Amsterdam Billiard Club, which in general terms is a premium pool product charging a premium price, has done a masterful job of making its premium product accessible to players of all levels and of all financial means. That’s why me and so many others who play there keep going back, and it’s also why Amsterdam will remain a pillar in the New York City pool community fr many years to come.

To sum, rather than focusing on the minor, and financially inconsequential abuses of the afternoon deal at Amsterdam, why not instead celebrate a room that has brought so much joy to so many pool players in the NYC area? Amsterdam Billiard Club, quite simply, is a great poolroom.

Wow, $29 for 6 hours is a deal? That's $4.80 an hour. Sure glad I don't live in New York. But then New Yorkers think nothing of paying $12 for a Starbucks coffee. So then why do New Yorkers become so cheap when they move down here to Florida?

A table here goes for $7 per person noon to 6pm and people are not lining up to rent them.

But I am sure that Amsterdam, by renting the table for the day, gets people to come in who normally wouldn't and spend money over the bar.

Jake

Why do they become cheap? Maybe because they don't get paid New York wages when they move to Florida, they get paid Florida wages?

alot of halls have a daily special..as other posters have said it is to bring in people in at a normally slow time of the day..i play mostly on my home table now..but the halls around me (south Chicago area)have specials about $9.00 11 am.to 6 pm..it is Not per table it is Per person... 1player =1 table=$9.00 or whatever ..6 players=1 table $ 54.00 ect...

I rented a table a few times over at amsterdam east by myself, didn't hook up with anyone to do it either ( but I did have those hovering over the table if I was to leave early so they can finish my table time up ( thought ), but thats not what this is about, this is about regulars that grab up a table every weekend and keep it and have different players play all day for nothing while I come in and have to pay $8.00 an hr. ( I think ) or whatever it cost! and they get to play for free, to me there laughing at the poolrooms policy and taken advantage of it while others have to pay to play ( the policy is unfair to all paying by the HR. ) IMO> THANK YOU!

But I'll probably be there in January to join the league anyway!

Actually, powerplays (table-time specials) are given throughout the day and well into the night. Most patrons are encouraged to buy them when they approach the front desk. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, it makes pool incredibly affordable for the bulk of Amsterdam's regulars. Secondly, it actually increases business. Having worked at Amsterdam for a couple of years, I can tell you that oftentimes, a strong day is like a snow-ball. If the room is busy, people will stay longer. If it's light, walk-ins will frequently get bored and go elsewhere.

There are occasionally patrons who have been known to take full-advantage of their power-plays. Most of the time, it's exactly as you described. Friends will play among friends and a few at the table end up not paying at all. The room has always believed that this is something they're reluctant to get involved with. It's private-business among two patrons. If a patron were to try and sell-off remaining time to walk-ins at a discounted rate, that would be a different story but for the most part, it's a deal among three or four patrons who stagger in play.

This may seem a bit odd to the outsider looking in but try and look at it a different way. The power-plays have encouraged socialization and have helped make the room one of the most tight-knit in New York City. At the same time, Amsterdam Billiards is often PACKED with competitive players who (as SJM has pointed out) participate in all of their tournaments and leagues. It is the only room in New York City (and one of few in the country) that has managed to maintain its league numbers and has even seen some nights increase in overall business. (ie., Thursday night now has over 20 teams as opposed to 14 two years ago).

I've spent a great deal of time discussing and debating each and every policy at Amsterdam with its managing partner and I can assure you, he is a complex individual who has an incredible business track-record and a genuine love of the game. He is very aware of the impact of every decision and has weighed them out against all other options. Amsterdam Billiards is exactly what the owners wished to accomplish when they opened. It is a New York City landmark and a destination in and of itself. Its regulars are a huge part of that aura and their presence has been an integral part of the club's success. The power-play is the essential element in maintaining that aura. Even though there are occasional draw-backs to having them, the benefits undoubtedly make them worth-while.

Steven:

You have to remember that pool halls rarely stay in business by renting tables alone. They usually make most of their money from drinks and food. If you calculate the money made from tables, they might be able to make $8,000 to $10,000 a year off of one table (after it is paid off). This is small time cash for the bar. They make that much in one day from drinks and food. The more people walking in to shoot for an hour or two, the more drinks fly off the bar. Now my advice is for you to hook yourself up with one of these table squatters and join in the fun. As DeadStroke said, you will learn alot and make some new friends. Even after you hook up with those guys, I bet you still spend your $8 per hour... less for pool, but more for drinks... The owners know their customers and know how to run a business (read as: make a profit). Now go make some new friends!
