An aiming experiment

I think I just had an epiphany.

Usually I practice at home and due to a lack of focus or over-focusing I shoot much worse than when I'm out. I usually shoot best on the weekends shooting with my buddies who are all better than me, better than on league night. I shoot best when the brain is turned off and I'm not really thinking, I'm just shooting. This is something I haven't been able to just "turn" on. When I think about position for the next ball it usually ruins my ability to pocket a ball AND get position.

Today I picked up my cue and stopped aiming altogether. I stood above each shot and visualized the entire shot from pocketing the object ball to where the cue ball would end up. I did not focus on aiming to edges or object balls. I focused on my desired outcome and allowed my subconscious to figure out the rest.

It was amazing how by using this technique both potting and position went up dramatically. Usually I focus more on one to the detriment of the other. When my visualization was something that the balls had the capability of doing, more often than not I achieved what I had set out to do.

I then realized that the pros must be using a similar technique because I've seen them often set their cue on the table where they want the cue ball to rest for the next ball. It could very well be that they are using this overall visualization technique and could explain why many claim not to use aiming systems.

I know my conscious mind is terrible at pool and my subconscious is pretty good at it. Hopefully this technique will allow my conscious mind to guide my unconscious mind in all degrees of pressure. I look forward to testing it in league and gambling.

You may have something there, about letting the subconscious shoot. After shooting terribly for about 2 hours one day, I started just farting around waiting for husband to finish on another table, and suddenly I was running out. When I abandoned analysis, it was like I got out of my own way...

Most players aim like this............

Hi there,

Most players aim like this from pros to amatuers. The problem is that your ability to make balls ends at your natural ability to naturally get the eyes in the right position.

Many teachers teach a player to go through the preshot routine from the standing position and this really helps to get the dominant eye in the correct position.

By not knowing how to get to this position you are limited to your pocketing ability. If you practice more you will naturally get to this position better from repetition..

This is the reason that on certain shots you just look at it and know your odds of making the shot is very slim. It doesn't even look like it will go. If the eyes are not right your brain can't get the right message to get the job done.

Once a person learns what I teach you will never get down on a shot and have it not look good because you will know how to correct your vision to look Perfect. You will know that this is the reason you miss most of the shots that you miss.

It will cut your miss in half and this is no exageration. But fact.

Give me a call and I'll help you understand how this works.

You are right that when it doesn't look right I usually miss.

And I agree this method only works if you understand where the cueball will go.

The most interesting thing is that I am finding the last thing I think about before striking the cueball is not where I am aiming but where I want the cueball to end up.
