So I've been looking for a way to set something up in my garage mainly just to spin shafts to clean them for now, eventually moving toward doing tip work and such. However, with a wedding and honeymoon coming up I'm on a very limited budget (like, non existent lol) I have an idea on something to set up using a cordless drill however I'm not sure what to use to hook into the shafts. I was thinking I could use a bolt the thread size of the shaft I'm cleaning with a nut and washer to make sure I don't run the bolt in too far and damage anything. However, the majority of my shafts are 5/16-14 and I can't find any bolts that size, everything in my local stores are 5/16-18 and won't work. I know some lathes use a rubber piece that just goes over the outside of the shaft but I have know idea where to get those either. So basically I'm just looking for some advice on where to either find the rubber piece some lathes use on the outside of the shaft or a 5/16-14 bolt I could use to put the shafts on. Anyway, an odd request I know, just trying to figure out how to use things I already have to do the work. After the wedding and honeymoon I plan on getting a small lathe, just mainly for shaft work, but right now I've got extreme tunnel vision and getting this idea in my head to work lol

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Steve

If you only work in 5/16-14 shafts just one joint screw that size and chuck it up in your drill.
When I first started fooling with cues, that's just what I did.
Don't expect too much out of this setup though:it'll mainly be useful for cleaning shafts.

Awesome, I don't feel like too much of an idiot knowing I'm not the only way that thinks that way to clean shafts lol I found the rubber colletts that fit the outside of the shafts on ebay that I can chuck up on, going to give that a try. Where is the best place to find joint screws?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Steve

steve, if you can someone to loan you or sell you a 5/16 x 14 tap,
i'll make you what you want
have to get a pin also

Go to Walgreen's Drug store and buy a rubber cane tip. You may want to take a shaft with you to see if they fit right. That's what I did years ago when I first started. Used an electric drill held in a vise on my workbench. Worked fine for cleaning shafts and replacing tips. Here's a thread from "Maniac" telling how he built his: Homemade lathe, done dirt cheap!!! A 5/16-14 lathe pin is $12 with 3/8 shank to fit most drills.
Sealer, Cleaner and Wax will cost you another $26.
See the lathe supplies page on the cuesmith link below.

I definitely appreciate all the info and help!! I'll be ordering a tap and a few other things, try to start putting this idea in my head together lol hopefully it will work out.
Thanks again!!!

Let your Imagination run with all the possibilities to fulfill your request. I am considering trying this out myself.

Harbor freight bench grinder and mount to a solid board which could be slotted for adjustment. Has a speed adjuster up to 10-K rpms not like you will need that much.

You may have to come up with an adapter to mount a chuck on it.

I did like this idea as well, provide by (Vahmurka)

Last…. a lathe steady rest which can also be adjustable with the slots of your mounting base.
