Taking the family to Disneyland and will have a night or two to get out and shoot while I am in town next week. I have been to Hollywood Billiards but nowhere else in LA really. Where are some sweet halls, bars, or clubs to check out?

Preferably in the Watts/ Compton neighborhoods???

Defineatley go to Hard Times in Bellflower, not far at all from Orange County. I don't know if Bob's Billiards is still around in Anaheim but that place was full of action a few years back. Also Shooters in Riverside is probobly the best Southern California poolroom these days.

I agree with bigdog. Hardtimes in Bellflower is or at least was a very hot spot for all caliber players to match up for action. I lived in Riverside from 88-92 and there was a place called Mr. Cues that had good action as well. That was some time ago so it may or may not still be in business or could have even changed names. I must say living here on the east coast I still miss Cali and all the good times there, especially at Hardtimes. Good luck and have a great trip.

I used to play at Mr. Cues

That place is still there, but has a different name now. It is a lot nicer than it used to be and is no longer open 24 hours. Mr. Cues was kind of rough joint, but there was always action and it was the only place open all night around. We used to drive down from Victorville to play there every week for awhile whenever we wanted to find some late night action. That whole crowd is now a shooter's over by the Tyler Mall. The room is a lot nicer and better equipment. They just had there annual nine ball tournament a couple of weeks ago and saw a lot of familiar faces. I would say right now Shooters is even a better action room than Hard Times, which I can't believe but that place has really slowed down action wise.

KC, I hang out by Danny K's near the Pond and home of 2002 World Series Champ, Angel Stadium.
Not much of a players' pool hall as the tables aren't GC's. It's more of a yuppie bar.
Definitely visit Shooters. Efren is here at HT but might be gone when you get here.
Hard Times, you gotta visit b/c once it was the Mecca of pool action. My friend calls it the Harvard of hustling.
Shooters is ran by a good friend of mine, Alex. Alex is also Efren's road manager. Alex knows how to keep action going. He knows how to be a player b/c he is a player.
So, there's plenty of action at Shooters. They even have a 10 foot snooker table which gets a lot of action. How good is Alex to players? Let's put it this, he hands them the key to the private tournament room when they play past 2 AM.
Players, north of Hollywood is a good place as well. Hollywood is even nicer now. Too bad they took out the snooker and billiard tables.
Around the central OC are a ton of little billiard places where you can find Asians playing 3-ball carom all day.

Where is Shooters?

Shooters is off the 91 freeway in Riverside, about 30 or so miles from Anahiem. Take the 91 east exit at Tyler I believe and take the first left, it is in a shopping center and not easy to see from the street, its easy to miss driving by. Best thing to do is call when you are in the area for directions.

You can call Shooters at 909-785-9588
From OC, it takes around 30 minutes to get there ( after 7 pm, 91 freeway is one of the most congested freeways in the world). Take 91 to Riverside, exit Tyler, stay in the middle lane, take a quick right to Tyler, then left on Indianna. It'll be on your right half a block from the light.

I agree to visit Hard Times to see quite a room but in case it matters let me warn you. A few years ago I visited my daughter who was living in L.A. at the time and while my wife and I were there I insisted on visiting Hard Times.
Well there was plenty of traffic, it was hot and we were tired after spending the day at CBS studios. My wife and I really were looking forward to a cold one and maybe I would see some action. I had no clue, not only was there no action that day "THERE WAS NO BEER". What a disappointment. On vacation I need a beer wherever I go. So just be forewarned in case you are thirsty when you get there.

Anaheim/LA

Apologies in advance:my first post.

RE. fka Mr. Cue, now QBONKERS. Good equipment, tight tables, now serves beer, seldom busy, minimal action.

SHOOTERS (91 frwy east, exit Tyler(rt) then immediate left on Indiana, 1/2 block on right (directly behind Turners Outdoorsman).

Well run; Find Alex (manager) for hookup. Good players, good people, good action. Tournament room has about 10 tables (not buckets) and 10 foot snooker table. Friendly place with a range of skill levels present.

TOURNAMENTS: Tues and Thurs 8:00 pm. Dble elmination. Run by MYRON (makes a very nice cue). SATURDAY: USPPA 2:30 PM ( see big daddy JEFF)
Single elimination. Usually pretty strong field.

Good room. Good Owner. Good management Room has character and characters. Young guns and knowledgeable players.

Occaisonally see Efren and Bustamante passing thru. That's always a treat.

DANNY K's Another good room . A cadre of strong local players. Tournaments (single elimination) virtually every day run by WAYNE ( still excellent 14.1 player and fair and accurate handicapper). Tuesday = PLAYERS nine ball league (the premier 9-ball league in southern california -virtually 100% payback). As a popular sports bar close to Angel Stadium and the Pond it can get loud. Many tables available; go to the back w/ tournament board for a game or serious practice. Other tables available for social games and bangers. I wouldn't call it a yuppie clientel, rather a mixture of casual and serious players with facilities for both.

Yuppie - try DIAMONDS in brea. Fine equipment, FINE FINE servers. Black and chrome decor. Can be young crowd- Cal State Fullerton close by.

You meet a lot of good folks and the occasional jerk in these rooms much like anywhere else.

Kind of wordy for first post. I'll work on incorporating those hip phrase abbreviations in any future posts.

Hollywood Park Casino has a poolhall upstairs owned by Jay Helfert. My understanding is there is good action there mainly with the black one-pocket players. There are 5 or 6 good tables with Simonis cloth (make sure they give you a good set of balls also). The other 10 or so tables are not in very good shape.

Hollywood Park Casino is right behind the Coliseum where the Lakers used to play in Inglewood (next to Watts/Compton).

Wayne

(Oh and Joey mentioned Players which was a good action room but unfortunately it closed down many years ago).
