Andy Gilbert J/B

I recently acquired a used Andy Gilbert J/B cue. I have used it for breaking but haven't had the opportunity to try jumping with it yet. When I bought it the tip was larger than the ferrule and cracked quite a bit. I had a new Omega J/B tip put on it, which I have never used before.

The shaft on this cue measures around 11.8 mm. This seems pretty thin for a J/B cue and it has that "whippy" feel to it. Is this the norm for a Gilbert J/B or has this cue just been whittled down perhaps? Its a 2003 and in nice condition for its age, it just doesn't feel like a solid breaker like I thought it would.

That's not the norm for Gilbert J/B cues. I've owned a couple and the shafts were around 13 mm. The thing about Andy's J/B cues is they typically are pretty good playing cues. Some people have bought these cues as their main player. Maybe the original owner ordered that shaft size from Andy or maybe they just had it turned down. If its too thin of shaft for you, pick up another shaft. I think Cueaddict has a couple for sale right now, or call Andy and have him make you one.

I talked with Andy on Thursday and he's pretty busy right now getting ready for Valley Forge.

Thanks Gman, I thought that may be the case but have never had a Gilbert before so wanted to ask. It is a beautiful cue and I am going to have to pick up a thicker shaft. I sent you a PM, thanks again.

Andy's jump breaks leave the shop with a tip diameter of 13mm unless a customer wants something different. In addition, the taper of all Gilbert cues preclude any 'whippyness', so my guess is someone before you has had the shaft re-shaped and was using it as a player. :)

Thanks for the info. I didn't try using it to shoot normal shots due to the hard tip, but with a hard hitting break stroke I could feel the shaft bend quite a bit. I have already sent Andy an email asking him about making a 13mmm shaft for it.

I just got done talking to Andy and as everyone had said he doesn't make thin shafts for his J/B cues, nor does he use Ivory in the ferrule. So it was probably a playing shaft.

Anyway, I have a J/B shaft ordered now, which I am very excited about! :D

Glad to hear its working out for you. Andy is one of the good guys.
