It allready comes with a 1/3 hp dc motor and controller

You could go into the controller and turn down one of the pots for slower minimum speed

Same motor and controller that is on one of the cue lathe makers

Is that easy to do? I like the idea of cutting it in half and extending it. If also like the morse taper head and tail stocks too.
