This is one of the outs that Cliff Joiner made in the 10ball match against Shane. The commentators just thought that he'd soft spin the 6 and just get a shot on the 7. Instead, Cliff went four rails back to the 7. I like the shot 4 rails if i'm feeling good about my cue ball speed...well it's hard to overhit, but you could run into traffic or underhit it.

I wonder if this was really the layout Cliff had, because I think 4 rails is the hard way to do this one. I'd play it with a touch of inside and go up and back off the end rails - much less spin and no possibility of hitting the 8 or 9, scratching in the corner or side, etc.
Of course, this may not be exactly what Cliff was facing...

I looked at the video, and the layout was a little (but significantly) different. My opinion might be different too for this layout, because it would take more than the touch of inside spin I assumed:

I actually like to shot this shot 4 rails myself. It is easier to pocket the ball with outside english and you don't have to be perfect with your speed to have position on your next shot. The only thing you have to worry about is scratching in one of the corners.
Now if the 8ball is in the way of going four rails then I use the eight to stop the cue ball and take the cut shot next.

Not to harp on details but I reviewed the video carefully and the location of the 6-ball is slightly different. In the original diagram, it's considerably closer to the rail than it is in the video which makes the shot increasingly difficult. With where the 6-ball ACTUALLY is, the necessary angle to go four rails is natural. He only had to hit it with center-ball.
