another predator shaft question...

does anyone know the diameter and how deep the hollowed out section of a predator shaft is? I'm thinking about running a series of experiments to see if a hollow shaft does produce less deflection.

I cut one lengthwise about 5 years ago. It had two diameters. This is from memory, but should be in the ballpark...The diameter is about 5/16" for maybe 2 inches deep, then it transitions to about 1/4" for the remaining depth. The total depth was about 5".

I have hollowed out a test shaft, and it definitely did reduce deflection on that shaft.

thanks for that info... when you say "transitions" do you mean like a taper from the tip to the bottom. or like a counterbore, where the diameters suddenly change with a shoulder? also I'm assuming that the top of the shaft is plugged. but if the hole is 5/16" ... then where is the tenon for the ferrule?

The transition was a step with a shoulder. There might have been a chamfer, but I think it was a square shoulder. I have a few more shafts lying around that I might take apart. The one I took apart years ago was thrown away, not by me :(

The hollow area was about 5/16, and around it is a wall of maple perhaps .050 thick per side. Then the ferrule is around that, also with a thin wall of about .050. I know I made a detailed sketch before, but I probably lost it. Look up the patent and they have a bunch of pictures showing the design....if you don't want to cut one apart ;)

Actually, you can see the ferrule design quite clearly from their own advertisements. Ignore the dark area right under the ferrule and the design will be clearer. That is a small piece of foam. You can also see how thin the ferrule and tenon walls are from this picture. Some people say that is a weakness, but I have personally never seen one of their ferrules break. I haven't even heard of a breakage in the room I frequent.

a lot of pros use it as a breakshaft and I guess it's pretty tough to withstand those shots

One guy at our pool hall had a Predator break cue for a year or two. Some time ago the ferrule cracked and he had to change to another break cue. There was no abuse, the ferrule just cracked. He's joking about his monster break after the ferrule cracked :p
