I imagine they'll look at this situation, and the decision it prompted, again after the event is done, and either stick with the ruling, or change/make a related rule based on what happened.
Sometimes you have to make a decision on the spot, and sometimes those decisions aren't the best. It happens to us all.
One positive thing about this - they had a situation, and they dealt with it, in a timely fashion. If they hadn't, then instead of complaining about the decision they made, people would be here kvetching about the TDs waffling. I've seen it more times than I can count.
As far as the Great Internet Unwashed goes, the whole situation was a no-win scenario for the event organizers.
