"Antique" Diamond Ball Polisher

I was able to find some time to glue up the upper cabinet segments.
Just double checking I'll have clearance for the padding, carpet, bonnet, etc. with my 3" tall 10" diameter PVC cans.
I recessed the mechanical deck into the lower case 3/4" to allow for a little more clearance and allow for the upper case to have posts in the corners to index into the lower.

Gluing up the Upper Cabinet. Accessory clamps in place to flatten the cupped boards....

I took Rexus31 and Muskyed's advice and reinforced all the joints with 1"x1" oak blocks glued and screwed into the corners of the lower and upper cabinets. I cleaned up the exta glue after the photo. Very sloppy on my part!:mad::mad::mad:

You can see the indexing of the upper/lower cabinets at the bottom of the reinforcing post. Also the reinforcing post is 7/8" short to allow for the upper deck (that holds the cans) to rest on them.

I've started to work on the top deck. After sourcing the can material (10" diameter PVC), cutting it to 3" lengths, smoothing the edges, I labeled and traced the outside of the cans on 3/4" plywood. The PVC isn't perfectly round so I indexed each piece to make placement easier.

I jig sawed out the holes making sure to leave the pencil lines, then sanded back to the lines for a tight fit

Turned out well.

I don't have a photo of it, but I pre-drilled, countersunk, and placed four 1-1/4" screws through the cans making sure the screwheads are slightly recessed.

I will laminate the top with a wood grained Formica, use a flush trim bit in a router to open up the holes and trim back the outer edges of the sheet. These outer edges will be recessed in the case so won't be visible.

I'm not sure what I want to do with the Formica edge at the cans. Rexus31 used a chrome edge, but I may just leave it. I can't think of an esthetic way to cover it that will match my table decor.

Looks great! How much of an offset are the openings in relation to the platters?

They are 12” platters and 10” openings that line up edge to edge so the spindle is offset by 1” from the center of the can. Is that the same as yours?

A nice piece of leather in the same color of your pockets might look nice.

If you go the leather route, you could even secure it with screws and washers in the same style as your rail bolts. If you have a tool like a RotoZip, you can make the trim ring out of thin plywood to glue the leather to. I think 3/4" to 1" thick would be nice.

I’m working on the wooden motor mount. I’ve countersunk four tee nuts into a 7“ x 7“ three-quarter inch thick piece of plywood. I plan on gluing and screwing it into the case using 9- 1-1/4” screws.
Each screw will go into the 3/4” thick oak case 1/2 inch. Hopefully that is enough to hold everything firmly over the long run.

I'm thinking of painting the top 1/2" of the inside of the cans black and just leaving the edge alone.
I'd prefer something protecting the edge. One good whack from a ball and it could chip the laminate. Aside from protection, it would add a finished look and incorporate some design elements from the table.

Ok, assuming that I can cut a wooden ring out to glue the leather to, then how would I attach it to the Formica top? I’d rather not see screws/ fasteners. Maybe two stacked rings, one screwed down and the second one leather wrapped on top and bare wood on the bottom to glue to the first ring?
Also, what do you think ball cleaning solutions would do to leather??

Love to see it and I’m always jealous at the skill some of you have to build these things from scratch. The gentlemen that built the one To match his gold crown still blows my mind every time I see it.
It's always fun to watch people build stuff. I get the beauty of seeing something come together and no smashed thumbs or budget overrun.

Got it. I thought you were designing the ball polisher in the spirit of the table. I thought it would be a cool feature to add the leather (leather pockets) and fasten it to the top using screws and decorative washers similar to the rail bolts on the table. Smaller, of course.

No, I’m on board with the idea, but honestly asking for advice on how to accomplish it. Thinking if I did the two rings stacked it might work, just not sure how I’ll do the leather wrap on the top ring, or if the glue will hold the two together strongly enough.

If you do what I'm suggesting, the decorative screws and washers would hold it down.

In looking at your lid, I'm not sure it would work though. It looks like you offset the openings vs centering the openings and off setting the platters. It looks like the ends may not have enough for a 3/4" or 1" trim ring.

Ok everyone, a quick quiz...... What is wrong with the above 2 photos?????? Scott and Glen can't play right now because 1) They are both too busy laughing, and 2) Scott was kind enough to point out the error of my ways! I'll post the answer in a while if no one gets it😂🤣😂
