Antique Maccassar Blank Conversion

AZ member Hunger Strike asked me to see if I could do anything with the pictured antique maccassar "blank". The butt cap and wedge inlays were completely missing. What was there was in pretty good shape though. Nice looking maccassar and some really nice straight grained maple. John asked for the placement of the wrap, thin trim, and for an ivory joint and butt cap based on how some of these old cues looked. Tricky, but fun project. :smile:

Was it able to be done wrapless? That was a beautiful piece of wood

No. What you see is what you get. It was sent to me cut off at the front just above where the picture shows. As a wrapless cue it would have been a 20 inch butt.

I wasn't sure if it was that short or if the pictures were cropped/edited. They look a little different because of the green circling on the background.

Understood. The scale between the antique blank in the rough and the finished full pic is about the same in order to help show what had to be done. Other than the discarded wedge area, only a little over an inch of the maccassar was removed. The swirl area shown in the rough blank is still evident in the finished sleeve. When I took finished pics I didn't think of picturing the side shown in the original rough blank pic.
 
Sweet cue! Restorations and conversions are some of my favorites. There's nothing like bringing a cue back from the dead and making a nice player!
