Any Action stories from Reno?

Anyone sweat any good late night action? Just curious if any big dogs matched up.

Wasn't it Mike that said in one of his posts that John Schmidt was doing well during the tournament and in action at night too?

I will not mention any numbers and I know there was a lot more than just what I saw.

Schmidt beat Chohan playing 9-ball 4 ahead midweek and then Chohan won his money back playing full rack bank pool with an unknown player later in the week.

I did hear that Mike Davis lost a little money (very little when you consider his $12,000 payout for the tourney) playing one pocket. I guess Mike is not the most experiences one pocket player in the world and it was a shortstop that beat him out of the money.

One thing that turned me off about the Reno tourney is that the staff at the Sands was not interested in keeping the room open to after hours match ups. Also they were charging exorbitant table rates that really upset some players. I guess they were more interested in getting the players down to the casino. One year when lot of the Filipino players were there (Efren, Busta, Parica, Santos, Alex, etc) they closed down the room so they all went down to the casino and dropped a lot of cash on the tables. Would have loved to see them in pool action.

As far as I know, the room was open until close to 6AM every night. It is not up to the Sands how much is charged for tables. That is handled by the guys that set up the tables.

Oh Mike- leave the one-hole alone...for now!

The explanation I heard was that Mike was doing ok when he played someone who would let him shoot at balls. When someone specifically concentrated on locking him up, he got frustrated and ran out of patience. I personally have never gambled at one pocket, but I would think that this would be common of young 9-ball players.

One hole is a game for people who have all the time in the world. it a timely game but i've play it just work on my banks and safety. But on the other hand i love 14.1 and i'll play anybody in that.

Hey yobagua,

Exorbitant rates? Ten bucks an hour for any number of players is far from that! My questions is, why would a casino want to hold a tournament of any kind without shuffling the players past the gaming areas? I found the staff at the casino to be very interested in player relations. I travel cross country to play there. Is it the best tournament we play in? I'm not sure. Is it one of the best? You bet. Incidently, the tables do not belong to the Sands. An independent table distributor provides the tables and receives payment for any after hours play time. Have you shared your thoughts with Scott, Linda or any of the Sands people?

Diamond Billiards on South Virginia was open twenty four hours a day. Any players who cringed at the thought of ten bucks would have been happy with the nine bucks an hour there. They even had two Diamonds set up with the same incorrect pockets as those at the tournament site! I heard more complaints about the pockets than the price. Oh well, different strokes for different folks!

Hey cardiac kid. Dont have a heart attack. I travel across the country too. Im just saying what some of the players were expressing and when Ive been there there has been no after hours action in the main room. I was disappointed that so many good filipino players were there that time that I was disappointed that they did not play in any action games. My loss. I think that at that time they might have had some overzealous young employees who did not know who some of the pros were and did not give them the proper respect. All in all I love Reno and it is a true OPEN tournament. Where if you have the upfront fee any one can play.
