Any AZers live in Tokyo?

I’m staying in Tokyo till mid March, and been checking out the pool halls around my area. Sunbili at Ogikubo, Risk at Koenji... it would be cool to meet up with someone local to shoot some racks or cheap sets and learn more about the scene, tournaments etc.

Hopefully someone useful will respond...

I asked the same question when I went there and was hosted by some great folks.

Good luck!

Yeah met a few nice people already, good players and good peoples! Wouldn’t mind travelling and checking out different pool halls though

I don't live in Tokyo, but I visit from time to time.

If you want to play tournaments, here is a schedule of most of the tournaments in the area. Most of the people are friendly and will try to accommodate as long as you are polite and respectful (behavior-wise, think 3-cushion or snooker instead of pool, i.e. sitting down when you aren't at the table, not talking/texting, etc.) even if you don't speak the language.

Due to lack of responses, I am guessing most of the azb Tokyoites from back in the day have moved on. You might try r/billiards on reddit as there have been a few active Japan threads there in the last few months.

Thanks for the tips, I been going to the Friday night tournament at Risk in Koenji. Met some knowledgeable players there, and played a bunch of sets with someone at a billiards bar close by, after we got eliminated early last night. The owner and server ended up coming over and challenging us to cheap doubles sets as well. It was a good night.

What game do you play with the local Tokyo players? I'd guess 9-ball is the most popular one; is that right?

Mostly 9/10 ball, both sets and Japanese style ring games, but Japanese rotation, 14.1, and even one pocket have some niche following. Carom is also fairly popular.

From my experience this visit and last, 9 and 10 ball is played on most tables, with 8 ball for mostly casual players. But straight Pool seems a lot more popular here than in Toronto, a few players have told me that it’s their favourite game. There’s also quite a few carom tables.
