im thinking about going to pawn shops since im on an extremely tight budget and see if i can find anything decent..you all ever find anything?

I personally Prefer Garage Sales

If you see NO Pool Stuff, ask. Guy I know scored a Will Hoppe Titlist & Case for $10.00.

Owner was asking $15.00, and this guy was checking the Cue, out and the Owner said he would take $10.00 because of the DEFECT.... Ivory Ring was Slightly Cracked.

As The Guy I know was walking to his Car the Owner said STOP, as he was also including the CASE TOO..... Sir Don't forget the CASE. ;)

I always go to a local DC auction on Mondays hoping to stumble on some forgotten Balabushkas...but no luck yet. It usually has a bunch of crap (like most pawn shops), but I did complement my "game" room recently with a beautiful full-mount Kodiak bear that I found there!

pawn shop finds!

2 it's george cases for about $6 each-
1 vinyl 1x2grey ostrich, 1 new condition suede/tweed;

best of all a cue identical to dr.wu's doc fry #1 cue;he said his was worth about $1200- billiardcue.com calls his a blackwidow for $1500. i am embarassed to say how cheap i got this cue. no i'm not= $35 and owner paid the tax!! cue was in GREAT shape til i got it. i use a lot of chalk and the original wrap has been cleaned once. someone took pains to keep this cue clean-may have not been used for 40 years.

Garage sales are also a good place to look, a friend found a Tad for $5 and sold it for $800 the next day.

lol nice bear! how much did that run you btw?

How does everybody find all of these great things in pawnshops and yard sales? I spent an entire day in Las Vegas one time going to EVERY pawnshop in the city and came up with nothing but cheap garbage. I guess it just takes persistence.

Another avenue would be estate auctions.

It was an unbelievable bargain! I guess it's hard for most people to fit something like that in their houses. Including delivery, less than 1k. The mounting by itself will run about 5k minimum, so it was a good find!

I think the bear would look better with a nineball in his mouth :D

That's an idea! With my break, I sometimes have to worry about the cue ball ending up in his mouth!

I had a guy come in to my pool room about 12 years ago carrying a old Joss West butt. He said he did light hauling and some old lady called him to haul out a bunch of junk in the basement. In the "junk pile" was this Joss butt, no shaft in sight. He said he really didn't play pool, but someone told him that I may have a "top end" that would fit the cue! I told him I didn't have any laying around, but I could make him a matching shaft for the cue. At the time I think I told him $85 and up depending upon what ferrule material he prefered. He gave me a look, and said I'm spending that much on half of an old pool stick. At first I thought he was going to throw the butt in the garbage can, but I told him I'd be interested in the "bottom end" if he wanted to sell it. He said "sure, what will you give me for it?" I looked in my pocket and all I had at the moment was about $100. I said "I'll give you a hundred for it!" I can still hear his response in my mind, he asked "dollars???" He took that "C-note" and headed for the door grinning ear to ear! I was pretty happy with the deal myself. I've bought 2 different 9' Gold Crown II's at different times and places for just $200 ea. One at a Salvation Army Store, one from a house that was hours from being demolished and the owner had tried to give the table away to anyone who'd remove it. I gave her $200 even though she just wanted it hauled away! It's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time! Oh, it helps to have a few hundred mad money in your pocket as well! These deals usually disappear before you can get to the bank and back! lol'

Sherm...remember Jeffs Trading Post on Dixie Hwy south of your gas station? I bought 5-6 cues from him and it got to the point when a pawner would come to off a cue, he would call me to find out the worth. I would low-ball him everytime, he knew it too but we both made out like bandits!!!

Amongst the cues I scored I got two very nice Hoppe house cues from him for $10 a piece and a Kersenbrock for $85...HAHAHAHAHA  See ya soon <somewhere I'm sure!!>

On a couple occasions I have found comercial pool tables at University Surplus Warehouse.

The best was Northern Arizona University. They had 7 nine foot Gold Crowns and 3 nine foot AMF that were taken out of Dorms. They were $100 each and you could view them for 2 weeks before they were eligible for sale. I get there 30 minutes earlier th first day they can be sold only to find all but one AMF has been sold. Somebody let there friends in early
