Any old RSBers lurking out there?

I was mostly a lurker in the late 90's through the early 2000's until I moved to BD CCB and then here at AZB. Once the whole FL thing started it made it tough to filter out all the aliases on a regular basis and the regular posters seemed to really cut back.

RSB was a great source of information and education in it's day!

Cut my teeth on usenet (Before there were browsers)... Started out as Dpaint Demon then Dehumanizer then SSCS and now JV. It is amazing to think how long ago that was. I haven't posted there on RSB in a loooooong time, thanks to Larry=douchebag!

Me too

I was there! I was a regular reader and poster in the early, then late 1990's. Then I quit pool for about seven years.

AZB is much better, I think, even though some of those old RSB posts were terrific.

I started off at RSB in 1995. I found a post from 1996, but I must have been on there prior with either AOL or Compuserve with some crazy username. In 1996, I started using my name as many of the RSB posters were using their names.

The Usenet newsgroups were largely techies since the internet and Usenet Newsgroups really were born out of the tech fields through the military and the colleges.

When Fast Larry hit the scene, that virtually overnight ended RSB as we knew it. Sure, we had a lot of flamewars, but that's what the forums were all about other than getting really good information in a rapid way.

It's been a while since I've been there so I just looked over there and the place is spammed up with watch ads. LOLz

I was a regular reader in the late 90s, too. I moved from there to CCB. I don't even know what "Jimbo's" site is, but AZ is enough for this addict so I think I'll leave it that way.

I even went to an RSB tournament in Chicago one year, that was fun! We should start doing something like that here.

Me too...

I was there too, but got real tired of the flame wars going on, and the lack
of Pool threads. I have never been to Jimbo's forum, nor do I care to.

I remember when Smorgass Bored was on WebTV for years and as far as I know he did not have any problems being snubbed by pc snobs except for maybe the occasional good natured ribbing here or there.

Back then there might have been more accessing the groups from unix hosts. I prefer IE7 over rn and webtv went where it belonged.

I would like to know who's here that used to post/lurk regularly on RSB. I know some of the more frequent posters but there have to be some that don't post often also right?

Is everyone over at Jimbo's site?

I was on RSB about a billion years ago back when I was on the CycleWorld chat too ('97-'98). AZB is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better!

I was an RSB lurker for quite a while, but I don't think I had an actual account.

I was, however, a member of the ICQ billiard group back when they had like 8 members, LOL. The only user name I remember from that group was Deno Andrews. Man, that seems like a lifetime ago.

FWIW, I still do both. I think most do.

Surely you refer to Fast Larry and his 39 aliases.
RSB was great for a daily laugh.

RSB > http://groups.google.com/group/rec.sport.billiard/topics

A recent and typical Fast Larry post :rotflmao1: > http://groups.google.com/group/larryguningerisaliar/browse_thread/thread/a67be32d419a2379
Fast Larry is an azz, but just as bad are the people who respond to his posts and give him the attention he craves. If everybody had just ignored him, which most people did, he would have gone away.

I was there from the early 1990s till FL got too annoying. Even met and played a few people from there, including Joey A., (not Fast) Larry, Mike Page, and Pat Johnson.

I am raising my hand as an RSBer. I checked out Jimbo's site, but all 15 registered users were online, so it was running kinda slow.

Back in the days before people sent pictures over the internet (much) there were a bunch of text-based news groups. RSB is short for Rec.Sport.Billiards and it was one of those newsgroups dedicated to pool.

It is unmoderated and eventually certain personalities who have no life started posting hundreds and hundreds of pages of posts that basically drowned out all reasonable discourse. Then also you have the crowd of folks trying to sell watches and stock tips etc...

You can see what it is by googling rec.sport.billiard.

I believe ASP was Alt.sport.pool or something similar.

If you don't have a newsreader such as free agent or your ISP doesn't provide news server access, I think the best way to view it via a web browser is http://www.recgroups.com/.

I am here - would like to go back there but have no desire to make my email public (google groups) and have zero desire to go there.

and YOU can give me 8:6 if we ever meet up again. :-) It's stealing for you trust me.

8:6? Ha, you can do your own due dilligence around here but I'm an easy mark at 1p.

Rsb

I am a RSB refugee from yesteryear.

AZ Billiards has the best pool & billiards forum on the planet.

I believe so. I remember when I met you, man, that ring game that night at Greenfields I got all the rolls. :D I went down there to see Chris and he wasn't even there.

But it was great to play with you guys. I miss you and C.O. and a lot of the players in Denver a lot.

~rc

That was quite a weekly ring game. Toughest $1/$2 game around I believe:smile:

I remember one night Rich Cunningham drew the lowest ball, then broke and ran 5 racks in a row. 3 guys quit before they ever got to shoot.

I used to regularly lurk and occasionally post to RSB back in the day. I met some great people in Toronto and Chicago through the group.
I also snapped of the 04 Toronto GWN in my first and only attempt-capturing the most coveted Great White North 'Non-gender-specific Royalty of the Hill "imitation" gold plated trophy.
Gaze upon it and suffer awe.
