Any pool halls to recommend in Manhatten?

OMG!!!

Another poster used the Time Warner Bldg as a mid-town reference so lets go with that.
I don't have a horse in this race, but since I lived in NY for a while. Here's my $0.02. IMO, Grand Central is a more typical mid-town reference than Time Warner. I always put Columbus circle on the cusp of upper-west and mid-town. When you hit the bottom of Central park, your getting into the upper sides. In fact, Columbus circle is just a brief walk to where Amsterdam used to be ;)

When I was there, we used to refer to downtown as lower manhattan. If you went below midtown, you went by area: Chelsea/Grammercy (which is actually in midtown), then the Village, then lower east/west, and then downtown/financial district. If you went downtown, you were WAY below 14th. For the visiting folks, I'm sure dividing Manhattan into 3 areas (upper/mid/down) is probably good enough. But if you live there, you need a little more info to get around.

The cool part is that my wife used to live in Murrah Hill, which was nice when I went to Corner. Oh the good ol' days...

"downtown" is what the yahoos from Jersey look for when they get out of the Holland Tunnel.

*no disrespect intended to the good folks of Jersey. Just meaning the rubes that come in to get wasted on the weekends.

Sigh... I'm getting nostaligic listening (reading) to all this! When I lived there, I always used to get confused at "downtown" being a neighborhood or a direction. (As in "Let's head downtown towards Amsterdam Billiards" or "That place is in Downtown") Is it possible that the expression used was referring to the fact that Amsterdam Billiards is downtown from mid-town, but not necessarily that it is downtown?

(HAHA! Let's see who understood THAT!) LOL

Wow, I'm sad to hear that they got rid of the 20+ 15 year old Gold Crown IIs that I played on a few months ago. The other IIs are around 40 years old but I wasn't aware that Brunswick made "horrible" tables back then.

And it is a shame that one of the great pool players of all time would have horrible tables in her place. But I didn't hear any complaints from Allison Fisher, Gerda Hofstatter or Tony Robles about the tables that day.

But hey, to each his own.
(-:

my guess is you dont know what good table conditions are.. but then again to each his own.. or maybe its just your standard is lower. all the locals feel the same way i feel so.. it cant be just me.

and just because brunswick made the good tables then and now doesnt mean that the table stays in mint condition does it ? if you dont take care of them they turn to shit.. understand?

and just because gerda allison and tony played and didnt complain about the tables makes it good equipment ? so let me guess.. you play with a cuetec and love it because earl used to endorse it right ?

i love ignorant posters.

Hi TD. I understand where you are coming from but I am sure you will agree that there are TWO equally valid usages for the word "downtown"

One, is to denote a specific PLACE which is what you did. Another is to denote a DIRECTION as in...if the street numbers are getting higher you are gowing uptown and vice versa.

I even used the old song lyric "The Bronx is UP and the Battery's DOWN."

Certainly, no one would argue that you have to go all the way to the Bronx to get uptown or all the way to the Battery go get downtown.

And the following is not meant for you...just certain others....

HEY, I ONLY SUGGESTED THAT THE GUY CHECK OUT THE BLOODY JOINT. GIMME A BREAK!!!!!!!!!

And you drew that conclusion for THIS statement of mine????

"so I would assume it would have to be that time or less on the subway...although I don't ride the subway so I can't testify from personal experience."

ROFLMFAO

Well, we now know that your reading skills suck so your guessing skills are suspect to. I've been playing pool for 40 years Bubba and have played with more world champions in the last 6 months than you've probably played with in your whole life. And post a PDF file of a petition signed by ALL THE LOCALS. Not just SOME of the locals or MOST of the locals...but ALL of the locals. But you CAN exclude those who can't read any better than you can because they wouldn't understand the question on the petition.

Oh I understand where the s..t is pal. It's between your ears.

Ignorant? At least I can READ. And what't the matter with cuetec cues?

Allsion has won more tournaments with one than all the other WPBA pros COMBINED.

It ain't the wand pea brain...it's the magician.

BTW, do you have a wand??? Just curious.

And you owe Jean Balukas an apology you moron.

hey guys,

Chill, shall we? It was just a passing question...I wouldn't want to see so many people get upset over it. Let's not argue over a game that we all love :)

Thanks for all the comments and responses. Really appreciate them.

And yup, I'll def do a search before posting these type of questions again. Apologies for that.

Cheers,
Benny

No need to apologize for not doing a search. things change over time so some of the archived comments might no longer be true.
