Any suggestions on a pool instructor?

I have only had one lesson with a BCA instructor, to start the lesson we talked about my playing and practice habits, and what I wanted to get out of the lesson. He then watched me hit some balls and we went from there.

Towards the end of the lesson he did explain a simple 3 rail kicking system that could be used, but it didnt take much time and wasnt in any way a major focus of my lesson.

I believe they have a basic outline for a first lesson, but do adjust according to what the student does right or wrong and what they want to get out of the game.

IMO I wouldnt cancell the lesson just because he talked about the kicking system. As far as him missing your first lesson, that is totally a call that you have to make. I know my instructor (Scott Lee) was late to my lesson because of a mixup with different time zones. I also know he tends to run over on the time. I signed up for 2 hours and he was with me for 4. I can tell you that I am glad I didnt cancell my lesson just because he was late (never even crossed my mind) he helped my game a ton.

I am holding off final judgement until I hear from him. He might have had a family emergency or something, which I would certainly understand. Same goes for the kicking system thing: it's probably only a small part of the lesson.

BTW, what is a reasonable charge per hour for a certified instructor?

It depends a lot on the situation. Some certified instructors are also room owners, and I think there are times when they give basic lessons for free to encourage play. The high end seems to be special schools with other events and charges included, and those seem to run up to about $500 per one-on-one hour.

I recall Hal Mix giving group seminars and I think he charged $125/student and had maybe 12 students for a 4-hour seminar.

In this area the typical charge seems to be between $30 and $50/hour, but that is for situations where the instructor has no overhead (travel or such).

My lesson with Scott was $75 per hour, but like I said I signed up for 2 hrs and he stayed for at least 4, but only charged for 2 so I got a good deal :)

It was money well spent!

I am planning on going to see Mark Wilson when I can get into his schedule, I think his is $250 for 4 to 5 hrs.
