any updates on the amateur tourney?

By the way, how has our colleague The One been doing in the amateur tourney?

Hi Lewdo, I was lucky enough to get a bye in the first round of the masters and then won my next two games 7:4. Next up was a guy who I wasn't looking forward to playing. I had seen him causing trouble on the next table to me in previous round and he looked like trouble. Well it started right from the coin toss. I called tails and he tossed the coin, it landed on the table as a tail so I said good luck and turned to get my break cue. When I turned round to y horror he said, it was a head! Anyway twenty minutes and countless insults later the referee tosses again and he wins the toss. He spends most of the match arguing over racks, talking on my shots and insulting me. I tried to ingnore him and played pretty well running out 5 racks to go 5:0 up. At this point he starts threatening me and telling me that if I win I he'll make sure I won't be able to play in the next round! I complain to the referee but they do little even though he is already on a warning. Anyway to cut a long story short I let him get to me and he started to play better and I lost 7:6, and to make it worse I missed a pretty makable 8 for the match at 6:4. Anyway I won another match after this 7:5 and then lost 7:5 in the next to finish tied for 25th. I was gutted to lose to such an a**hole but it was a valuable lesson and I took it on the chin. I won't mention the guys name but it was nice to have about ten people come up to me after the match at various times telling me that the guy was well known for sharking but it still didnt change the result lol!

Anway hopefully I will go better in the VNEA because I was hoping for a top 10 finish in the masters. :-(

But its been a good week though with way too much partying, watched some of the pro events and also sat with sjm and Sarah Ellerby. The final was also good, but Hohman was hitting the ball superbly.

Hey, The One, thanks for relating the news. It's unfortunate that such a guy should be given a blank check to shark as he sees fit during your match. I mean, I'd be as pissed off with the tournament director as I'd be with the guy himself. There's no excuse for letting him get away with the stuff you described.

I'm glad that aside from Mr. Jaws there were many other enjoyable moments for you in Vegas. I hope to be going next year...

Did you and sjm watch the final together? Geez, 7-0, it's still hard for me to believe!

Catch you later and good luck at the VNEA tournament!

there are A-holes at the Vegas tournaments every year. Sorry you ran into one. I've had to deal with people like that in the singles and the team event there before. All kinds of moves and shark attacks. I've never had anyone threaten me and I not sure how I'd deal with that. You should probably have requested the ref to stay and keep him under control til the match was over. If the ref refused after the threat, go to the head ref. and then to the tournament director. That is bullshit when guys like that are allowed to intimidate their opponents. I'll be out Thurs for the Valley tournament and would like to meet some of the people from AZ. I haven't posted much lately because of time constraints due to family. But a year ago I hardly missed a day of being here. Wish all of you the best of luck. Sam Kirby

Letting people like that remain anonymous does not help matters, it makes them worse. I know it is a honroable thing to just suck it up but with all due respect people have to make these aggresive people and those in charge of these events aware that this kind of action by people will not be tolerated. If the refs are not willing to take action against a person actually threatening violence on a person and cheating and sharking throughout the match and then on top of that the person is allowed to do this stuff with complete anonymity then how are we to stop this stuff from occuring? He will be back there next year doing the same thing to someone else that he did to you, tarnishing the event and our sport. He should be named and hopefully he learns from it that he needs to cool it or his growing rep will force action by the refs next time.

get his name out here

U need to tell all of us his name so we can all avoid the situation u went thru!

I did complain to the head ref, I also asked him to watch the game and he said "no, youre big boys you can sort it out for yourselves"! He did nothing and was basically not interested. I foud out later that other guys had complained about the gut but this was not taken into account. The only thing the head ref said was that he would keep an eye on the game from the head table, but everytime something happened and I looked over he was gone sorting out some other issue probably.

His name was Anthony Vincent if I remember correctly

Biggest a**hole I ever played

I think I would have told him "Fine, I am going to kick him in the nuts and then break his fucking arm next time he spouts off, can I get him put on the clock for slow shooting after that point?"

normally...

Normally I am a pretty patient man, but if I run into someone like that, it can get to me, and I usually solve by telling them to sit down while I am shooting,
and to keep their f**k**g mouth shut. Loudmouths like are usually emotional type people, and when they are forced to act contrary to how they want to, they get real emotional, and can not shoot worth a sh*t.

Yeah, we had a few of them, told him to shut the fuck up but from what I was told he always does it, thats the way he wins. I also asked the ref to tell him to sit down and shut up but it all fell on death ears. Anyway, he lost his next two matches which made my day but didn't change my result!

Sorry that you had to deal with such low budget behavior at a National tournament. Tony has that kind of rep all over his area. The worst part about Tony, is that he does stuff like that and when someone invites him to put his $ where his big mouth is, he just keeps yappin' instead of backing his mouth up with his play. He's a good player too. He shouldn't have to act like that.
