Anybody ever use Kauri?

Kaury

Talk to dwight sisson about his Kaury cue with the mammoth ivory inlays. He seems happy with it. He goes by Big Dog at Large on AZ.

i am not a cue builder but have thought about getting some larger turning blanks (there are a couple distributors on the west coast) and having somebody build me a cue out of it. as novel as it would be to have a cue made out of it, everything that i have seen has compared it to pine in density and workability

Bob Flynn of Denali cues has worked with it. I think he has some turned round on his website.

i made 3 cues

about 3-4 years ago i made 3 different cues using it, the wood i had was the 50,000 year old silver flaked stuff. it is very easy to work, very light and kinda soft. using no weight bolts and a steel pin the butts weighed about 12 - 13 oz each. one got snapped in half by the post office, one sold to a buddy in calif, the other hangs over the counter in a tobacco shop in vegas.
if you just want to say i have a piece of 50k old wood in my cue, go ahead and use it as trim rings, but i believe there are many more wood choices out there that would make a better cue.

How old is your cue?
50 thousand years old.
Really? Did they have pool halls way back when?
Of course, haven't you ever watched the Flintstones? They even had bowling alleys.

Kinda makes my 70 yr old Brunswicks feel young.

The problem with Kauri is finding a piece that has good tonal qualities. You need to goto a place that deals in lots of it and allows you to pick the piece that sounds good to you.
Just because it is old does not mean it is good.
I do have a couple of really good pieces, that I will be using in a couple of cues at some time.
