Anybody got a set of rules for a ring game?

I was in a ring game tonight for the first time and the rules seemed to be a work in progress.

Is there such a thing as standard rules or do they vary?

In my experience all have to just agree on the amount and shoot to hit conditions and the order or play before the game. If someone else joins the game in progress, they need to ask what the basic rules are of the game already established. Or the other players should inform the new player so there are fewer arguments!!!

The way I have played is called gentlemens pool where if the player shooting doesn't make a legal hit and the incoming player doesn't like the shot, He/she can make the previous player shoot again.

If you are playing more than one money ball such as the 5 and 9 and the 5 goes early, it gets spotted, whereas if the 9 goes early, we always played the game was over.

Hope this helps.

General Rules.

What game? I'll assume you were playing 9 or 10 ball.
Of course, you flip coins to determine the order of play.
Some general rules.
1. No Safeties.
2. You must contact the object ball, or the next person in line can make you shoot again or they can take the shot.
3. When someone scratches the next player gets ball-in-hand behind the headstring. If the object ball is in the kitchen, it must be spotted.
4. If you make a ball, then scratch, that ball is spotted and the next player gets ball-in-hand behind the headstring.

That's about it as far as rules...#1, can be played different from pool room to pool room, and it's usually the most controversially part of a ring game.

Sometimes, it's who ever makes the 9 or 10 gets the money but, mostly ring games are played by a point system and whoever gets 10 points wins. Usually, there are two point balls or money balls, the 5 and 9 or the 5 and 10.

Here are the rules we generally play by. In my experience there is a base set of rules in which a few are optional, or can be modified to fit the situation:

- Usually $1 on the 5 and $2 on the 9. The player that makes the 5 gets $1 from each other player. The player who makes the 9 gets $2 from each player.
- Flip coins using odd man out or some other random way of choosing the order of shooters.
- We will normally play with 10 balls making the 5 and 10 money balls if there are 4 or more players.
- Optionally we sometimes charge $1 if a player scratches.
- Gentleman's offense - any foul is option to the incoming player to hand the shot back. No ball in hand. It is considered a foul to purposely play a safety. Each stroke should be an attempt to make a ball. Two way shots are okay, but the primary objective should be offensive.
- Any scratch is played from the kitchen with the incoming player having option. If the lowest numbered ball is in the kitchen the shooting player can choose to have it spotted.
- 1 before the 5 and 2 before the 9: if the 5 goes and there is one lower numbered ball still on the table when the balls come to rest the 5 is spotted and the shooter is credited the money ball and continues shooting. If the 9 ball goes there must be 2 lower numbered balls left on the table to spot the 9. In a scratch situation there must be 1 ball before the 5 or 2 balls before the 9. Example: a player scratches while making the 4 ball. The 4 ball would spot up and the incoming player has option from the kitchen. If a player scratches on the 9 ball the 7 and 8 and 9 all spot.

Other than that normal 9 ball rules apply. It is important all players fully understand and agree to the rules before play starts, so if we have a newbie, we usually play a practice game or two to allow questions to arise and be answered.

We have been known to give less skilled players a spot by tallying points instead exchanging dollars each game. We keep track of dollars on a tally sheet, and give up 10 or more points at the start. This encourages people to gamble with us without losing too much.

Have fun!
