painting Gold Crown white

I found out that Brunswick has always used Sherwin-Williams paint for the early Gold Crowns. The color is called Dovetail white I believe. I have redone many GC I's in this color and they come out great.

Gc ii

Here is my GC II...........

I purchased the table from the original owner who took brown paint and brushed it over the white to make appear as though it were wood. It looked like a nightmare!!!!!!

So I stripped it down completely and repainted it GLOSS white. I used a Krylon GLOSS white 51501. Not the original color but it turned out great.

The owner also chained all the castings to gold. He had them polished and then sprayed with some type of translucent paint. They look good!

Paint

Thank you for posting the pic's and paint codes...you have been a great help..i am in the process of getting the gc 1 now...i will post when i get pic's and do a before and after

im surprised they wouldn't use a tinted lacquer instead of a paint. i would definitely use an epoxy or Pro-Classic, great Sherwin product hard as a rock and water based

what to use for paint on GC1

Hi folks, new to site and loving it! I just purchased a Gold Crown 1 in nice shape. previous owner stripped the blinds and fortunately did a nice job on the natural wood finish. Reminds me of old long surf boards from the 60's. He did the base in dark brown simi gloss ....boring. Now I am in a quandary on what to do. Do I strip it, if so with what, sandpaper, stripper, can you help me out on this with some advice?

Also I was wondering if a high gloss black lacquer think of a piano type of black finish. Has anyone seen this done? If so any other ideas, pictures, or other advice on the base would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Allen

Get a paint stripper gel. Those are the easier to handle. Brush it on liberty, and go have a beer. Come back and all the paint will be bubbled up. Take a plastic scraper and the paint will just peal right off. Sand it all down after it is dry with 180 or 220 grit sand paper on an orbital sander and you are ready for a new finish.

As far as the black lacquer finish goes, it looks really good when it is all done, but be prepared for a lot of prep work of sanding perfectly smooth, filling all the imperfections, then sanding again. When the table is all together, the legs and stretcher are not seen all that well, so a nice coat of two of high gloss paint will really give you a nice finish that is much less labor intensive as a true piano finish. It all depends on how much work you want to put into the table.

What kind of shape are your rails in? Now is a good time for you to get the rails in shape while the table is apart. With the GC1 your rails will have to be modified to accept the new K55 rubber. While you are at it, get those pockets tightened up and you will have a table that plays great and looks good.

i stripped the orig white off my GC1 and refinished the wood then sprayed the skirts with polyurethane. i also painted the pocket castings with epoxy black.

reverend: what mods need to be done to the rails for K55 rubber?

tksix: that GC looks great.

The Monarch cushions that were on the GC1, GC2, and some of the early Super Speed cushions of the GC3 were all about 1/8 inch smaller from the point of the cushion to the back. Jump to today, with the Super Speed cushions, the Diamond Black cushions, and the Artemis Int K55, if any of these are installed, the playing surface is not correct 50x100 anymore. The fix includes cutting the sub rail back at the correct angle, and also adjusting the height of the rail as well....I hope that answered your question.

rev: yes, it does.... years ago i bought 55 cushions for my table above and noticed that the playing surface had shrunk. my main concern however was that the table played slow. i'm guessing that the new cushions were also a tad higher than the originals. but that table is long gone and i'm installing my fifty dollar, 8' Gandy in my new home in florida. life could be worse....i'm going to bondo the seams and paint the castings today....
