I had a Mizerak Dove plain Jane stolen. Never really thought much about it. Still had my BEM Miz and bought a wrapless players to make my second cue.

Beat a guy outta $2,600 in the 80's (great score back then (they walked and somehow so did my cue.)
Never even knew what type of cue it was, but it played good.
The road player came in with his stake horse, played the horse (he knew me) they left broke, and so walked my cue.

I wonder what happened to my friends cues that got swiped and how fun it still would be to beat the life out of the person(s) that did it.
After playing my match one night at league, I packed up everything but my breaker because a teammate was using it to break with. At the end of the night, I grabbed my cue case and hit the road. Of course I left my breaker behind. It was just a cheap Action jump break cue, and I had left it behind, so I replaced it with another and moved on. The next time we played that team, one of the players on the opposing team brought my cue over to me. It turns out that he had been using it as his playing cue since the night I left it behind. I ended up selling it to him for the same price I had bought the replacement for. The last time I saw him, he was still using that break cue as his playing cue.
Years ago I suggested that Az create a cue registry and charge a fee to have pool cues registered as owned by you.
As a practice, every ethical cue dealer, collector or just a periodic buyer should check that the cue seller is the owner.
I don’t expect every single cue to get listed but the more expensive, collectible, sentimental custom pool cues could.
Every single cue I own I’d register. Pawn shops should be required to double check which would be simple and easy.

Back in college, in the 70's, I had my one of a kind custom from Palmer's custom shop, stolen...I used to take it to school to play in the game room...I had to go to my next class, and walked out to my car to get my books and I hid the cue in the way back, (area behind the rear seats, where the convertible top folded into)...locked the vehicle...came back from class and my top was slashed, and the cue was gone...there was a weird dude in the pool room that day, that I had never seen before, and he wasn't even playing, just watching everyone else...on my way back from putting the cue in my car, I passed him in the parking lot...he probably saw me put it in my car...never saw him or the cue, ever again...I think about that cue all the time...
Lost a couple, Vegas 2002. They were after the car and the cues were a bonus. I genuinely hope that they landed in a collection somewhere. Maybe someone brought them to Fatboy. 
I wouldn't be mad or have any claim against anyone who bought them twenty years ago. Better than a dumpster. Have several old cues myself now and damn sure can't say that none of them were ever stolen.
