Anyone ever see this man beat?

Jimmy Matz

I only knew Jimmy from 1969 (I was 15 and Jimmy was 17) until 1981 when I moved away from Reading, PA. This was all prior to him flipping over his Corvette in Florida which began his slide due to drugs due to the head injury. Just wanted people to know that he wasn't always like that. Most folks only knew him post accident! If you thought he played strong after the accident you should have seen him play in the 70's.

Saw him play several times in the early 90's. He hung in Greenie's poolroom in Pikesville for a few months in 1992. I was told at the time by a few knowledgeable guys about how good this guy once played. You could clearly see that he had been through the mill but he still could play. There were alot of strong players that came through that room during that time period and I don't remember any of them trying to play him. He played a couple average players for a couple dollars a game and ran rack after rack. I believe he died shortly after that. Sad story.

And Earl was playing Earl Gear. The Mezz told him what ever you do, never enter any of the tournys. Scary thought.
Probably one of the best money player players on his own money or any one elses.
RIP Jimmy Matz,

Nick :)

I know in the 80's he played Mike Sigel in the US Open 9 Ball fairly deep into the tournament. Jimmy lost 11-10 and this was when Mike was in his prime.

Frank thanks much for lending me the tape with Matz playing. I believe he could hang with the best today after seeing that.
