My 21 year old daughter Ashley is going to be in NYC from Dec. 14-19 & asked me to ask y'all for suggestions of fun not so touristy places to shop, eat, & just go see; she's already done all the touristy stuff on an earlier trip. She already has plans to surprise her Uncle Tony at Amsterdam Billiards & she has Jerry T's number. Thank you so much for your help!

Can not beat the Museums. Maybe Rockerfeller Center to ice skate and see the tree.
Shopping have her go to SoHo great area to look around, shop and eat.
Can not suggest any Clubs or bars as the ones I remember have been closed for decades.

If you can get a nice day Washington Sq Park is always good. Tons of street performers, local eccentrics and regular folk too. 5 min walk from ABC

There are plenty of places to eat in the East Village, and walking distance from Amsterdam Billiards. Here are some of my favorites.

Venieros Italian style bakery is on 11th and 1st. I find it less touristy than Ferrara's in Little Italy. If she likes spicy chinese try Xian Famous Foods on 8th and 1st. The food there is just the same as in their restaurant in chinatown.

The Halal Guys recently opened a new stand on the new east corner of 2nd avenue and 14th. The food is exactly the same as their flag ship stand on 53rd and 6th, but without the hour long wait.

Veselka on 2nd ave and 9th serves some good ol ukranian food. They're open 24/7 just like Bereket (turkish grill) on Houston and Orchard.

Thanks, she does love to eat lol!

Manhattan is interesting, but a 21 year-old would probably love to spend a day or two in Brooklyn meeting some of the hipsters that are living there these days. The place has a great vibe now, a bit like Haight-Ashbury but with iPhones. My oldest son and his GF live there, and if she makes her way to Blue Bottle Cafe on Barry St. she can go in and ask for Nic and he would be more than glad to tell her some of the hippest clubs to visit while serving her up the best latte in the city.

Shes in good hands with Jerry T.

My favorite restaurant around there is Spain, on 13th street around 8th ave.
I can just taste the seafood mariscada with green sauce!

Monday evening, The Magic Flute will be performed in English at the Metropolitan Opera House. The Family Circle is sold out, which from my perspective is an advantage, because standing room tickets will be available. Those tickets are fair inexpensively (<$30). The opera is less than 2 hours. My wife is 5'2" and does not have a problem seeing over the wall in the standing room section. She would need to follow the instructions to make sure she can get the standing room tickets. If she does not have experience with opera, The Magic Flute at the Met would be a great way to start.

Thank you for all the suggestions, Ashley's taking her last final tomorrow so after that she can come on here to read all these and thank everyone. She's really interested in finding some good thrift stores I know, she loves to shop but doesn't like spending a lot of money.
