Im not sure if anyone would be keen, though i was thinking:

Maybe in a years time (to allow me to save), i'd like to offer someone whos willing to fly out to Sydney Australia, and allow me to be a tour guide in exchange for helping me get started up and on track for making cues. Maybe doing some shopping in the states on my behalf also would be helpful as you will know what i need (new or 2nd hand).

Deep Sea Fishing, Hunting, sight seeing the harbour, i'd be happy to show you around and make sure you have a great holiday.

There are some great courses in the USA i would love to attend, like Arnots cue making school or the like, though with my first baby a few weeks away and my fear of flying increasing, i cant see myself getting to the states any time soon.

I did ask the gentleman who made my first snooker cue to allow me to pay him to learn the trade though he politely declined. I can understand that.

Im 30 now, im looking for something i can do as a hobby at home, and still be doing at 70 or 80. Cue's have always been a passion of mine, and my interest in working with wood is increasing. I'm really excited about the possibility of making something i could play with.

i understand the complexity that goes into cue making, though how long would i need to have someone with me to learn the process? at least get me started?

Thanks for reading.

Buy Chris Hightower's book and Barringer's dvd's before you decide on anything. Then make a decision on whether to spend more money.

Very good offer.
I think a good repair person and a maker is needed in your beautiful
city and country.

Nice offer for anyone but myself. I wish that I could qualify as I may be retired sooner than later.

As Randy mentioned, Chris's Bible and DVDs as well as Joe's is the best start.

My Bible is in the shelf of one of my work Benches for handy reference.

There is a ton of Archives on AZ. Search a question and I can almost guaranty that any question that you may have, has already been discussed in detail.

Nothing stopping you from making text Files now. There has always been an excellent support base right here in this Forum.

I came from a bit of a carpentry back ground thanks to my Good Father, handling power tools from an early age. A fair amount of wood lathe experience and minimal on a machine lathe.

Yet, I studied the Archives, Chris's Book and the DVDs. Set my first lathe up and started making a bit of saw dust fairly quickly.

Trust me, it takes a bit of willingness to learn and study but if I can do it pretty much right out of the box, I would believe that anyone can.

Altho, I would like to visit Australia anyway and do a bit of Steve Irwining around and catch me some snakes.

You know from my past posts how much I appreciate being around dangerous snakes.

I could surf the Great Barrier Reef but then, I don't like being around fishes that can eat you either.

Fishing is my second greatest hobby. Then I can catch fish that want to eat me.

Guess we would have to hang around the shop and pool halls. I can guarantee you one thing. It wouldn't take much for me to acquire a taste for Australian beer.

Ooops, did I say Beer. Brent, BHQ will be right with you.

Hi Joey,

There are a fair few guys around making cues, though they are all snooker orientated. My first 9 ball cue was a snooker cue with a larger diameter shaft made to go with it.

I'd love to start making cues for my friends and if they work out ok, look into a side buisness if there is a market, maybe tip repairs. There is always the snooker market as well.
I wouldnt imagine there would be a roaring market for "9 ball cues" due to people shopping in the USA like i did. I realise this is a hobby and not a money making venture.

Hey mate,

Good news. A month has gone since we last spoke and I am yet to be bitten by a snake or attacked by a great white. Unfortunately a lady was taken off a beach down south of where I am so it’s a reminder it can happen.

I’m heading over to my father in laws tomorrow who is a pen maker amongst other things. He has lathes and all the tools and I’ve asked him to take me under my wing. He also has a great relationship with the guys who supply exotic woods so that’s where I can start.
I read some advice on another thread which is start collecting wood now. I’m keen to learn what wood does what, and what I should be putting away for the future. My first little project is a cue rest/shelf, a portable cue rest for the table at the pub/pool hall and then a cue rack. Then onto cues when its time to pull the trigger on my own lathe.

I’ll get those books and DVD you mentioned. Thanks for the tip.

Do you mean text files as in take the information from here and store it in ways that it’s easy to find when its time?

One question I’ve been thinking of, do cue makers need to make shafts? With the LD technology out there, would it be feasible to get partial predators or OB’s and fit them to the butt you’ve just made? Does that save on machinery required? I’m guessing if I’m looking to do repairs ill need that type of lathe anyway.

Fishing has been my number 1 hobby since I was a pup. Here’s some footage of the type of fish I could put you on, should you make it over here:

P.S Send me your address and ill send you a few Aussie beers in the mail. If you like them, I will take you to the brewery.

All the best,

Dave.
