Just read on the APA site that in the final four matchup at nationals for nineball, one of the teams got DQ in the top of the Riv matchup. Looking at the standings, three team shows as being disqualified, Dimitri's from toronto, One Away from Jefferson LA and 50 shade of Grey out of Jackson MS.

Second year in a row the DQ has come into play in final four. Anyone know what happened this year?

btw congrats to the winners Pool Mafia out of Lake Worth Florida. I saw them on the casino floor the night they won and boy were they a happy bunch. The team capt pulled out a 15k horse choker knot out of his pocket to show me. Very happy for them, kudos on snapping it off!

I was there in 05 and thye DQd a team that played in the final 4 and gave the spot in the finals to the team they had just beat.

I think it happens more than people think simply due to some of the rules they have like players or teams moving up certain amounts of SLs etc or teams being observed.

Last years I know was different and worse IMO.

Was this years DQ before or after the finals were played?

And the sad thing about that capt with 15k, He wouldn't play a $20 game if his life depended on it.

I believe this year it was just from the number of players on the team being raised it wasn't a controversy like I was last year.

First, I flat out don't know the apa format for ranking players and teams and so on, but, it strikes me weird that a team can first, even enter an event if they are "against the rules", let alone get that far before they are DQ. A great cue maker, player, person from Florida told me that last year or maybe the year before last, in the APA Florida State Tournament, a team mate of his was DQ as he shot above his average ?? I mean, a bad player can shoot good over a stretch of time and a good player can shoot great over a stretch of time, just like a great player can shoot bad over a stretch of time. When this friend of mine went and threw a fit over his team mate getting axed from the tournament, guess what?, yes the Florida apa tournament officials sent my friend packing as well !! Maybe it's the Florida apa commission themselves?? I thought the goal in sports overall was to get better and when it's the time to shine, you can't ?? I admire the concept behind the apa, but, really? DQ a guy because he shot above his average in one match. Wow. I told my friend he should have sent up another team mate whose results were below average and see if they could have adjusted that !! To many league organizations are screwing up with this handicap crap. I think they just need divisions and a team is in a division, or better yet, no handicap and one big tournament like it was years ago. I started tournaments many years ago and got my butt kicked as a major learning lesson. Now, I get a little of that revenge and someone can throw me out of a tournament because of some lame situation. Wow. Now I do understand, that this post is about apa and maybe some team having a non qualified person or persons on it, which then, why let them in at all with that roster? It's not that tough if the committee has their act together. Maybe they need a few player representatives to help do a pre tournament qualifying check. I have always treated competition with respect, but, being a player who has crossed a generation going on two, it sometimes is frustrating to go to a tournament and hear nothing accept whinning from players and teams about how much free help they can get with handicap and this or that on other teams. Holy crap, these same whinners jump for joy when beating great players, even if they only win one out of five games as their handicap is so high, the great players must play almost the perfect match to " try " and win. I think the apa has a good ground basis and format. However, I also think that the leagues out their and different organizations may also have to just let players know that maybe they need a little more practice table time instead of bonus handicap.
These are just my opinions and want to see players learn and get better. I've been beaten by some wonderful play by my opponents who have seized the moment to shine and I congrat them on a great effort or capitalizing on my mistakes. It's harder though to smile knowing that I needed to basically win 7 games to their 2 wins for a match. Many years ago, Billy Steele wooped my butt, I can't imagine that I would have taken pride in winning a match if I only needed two wins against him. Louie Lemke, same thing, I learned a lot from watching him at the table and myself in the chair !!, did beat him in a one game money match and sent him to the back of the line, that was like winning the world title for me back in the day, lol. I practiced my butt off to just give x amount of great players a good match, let em know I'm in the building. Can't imagine taking any pride in competing against and heavens forbid to beat them because the odds were so stacked up against them in my favor. It's time we all get back to the table and put the energy in getting better or smarter or yes, luckier instead of this DQ stuff. The teams should not be penalized once in a tournament. That is solely on the committee and that's who the players should go after. In my opinion only. Sorry to ramble, but, goodness gracious we should all take pride in who our local - state - national and international champions are. For all those players in all the organizations, I say good job, fantastic run, but, I'm gunning for you, your on my hit list. LOL...
Good Luck all.

I played in APA for over a decade. There are soooo many teams out there sandbagging like crazy! I captained for a few of those years, and yes it is important to keep your roster in good handicaps but having players just straight up lose on purpose to stay a lower skill level is BS!! I was able to keep my lower numbers down by playing them against players I knew they couldn't beat. 2 birds with one stone. They learn to grind against a tough opponent that will untimately make them stronger, but still lose the match. I'm honestly surprised more teams don't get DQ'd in both district finals and national finals in LV. I've been there 3 times with teams from APA and have overheard on numerous occasions, not even trying to pay attention, open comments made about sandbagging. It's almost become an accepted path for APA players. "Dump your first 5 weeks so we can make you a 2 or 3"

my team played in the 9 ball division this year in vegas and although it is the 1st time there for every one on my team i would like to share my opinion from a newbies perspective.

it seemed to me that the officials there were very concerned about sandbagging and perhaps tried too hard to prevent it. in other words , if in doubt, raise a player .

i think what every one is forgetting is that your handicap is not just based on what you do in vegas but your winning percentage in the last 20 matches before you got there. your wins in the playoffs, the last tri cup and the cities or whatever you call your qualifier for vegas all add up. if you are winning in vegas your wins add up and consequently you are raised..

take me and one of my teamates for example.

my 2 was raised to a 3 after her 2nd match in vegas. she won against a 2, 12-8 in her 1st match and won 12-8 against a 3 in her 2nd match.

i am a 5. i won my 1st match 20-0 against a 5. won my 2nd match against a 5 , 17-3. i was down 18-2 after the 2nd rack in my 3rd match against a 7. i am down 18-0 before i ever get to the table.i lost 55-36. that means after i got to shoot i scored 36 points to his 37. in my book thats darn good shooting for a 5 vs a 7. i never went up after those 3 matches.

i am sure every one who saw me shoot thought i was a sandbagger . i know i shot way above my normal speed but there were several factors. i was pissed because of the poor level of play from a couple of teamates and i was drinking,.i just play better when i drink but i never drink during regular league nights.

now it seems odd that my 2 was raised after a couple of average wins and i was not after 2 blowouts and one darn near good come from behind effort.

well the fact is my 2 was used quite a bit during playoffs and won her matches. i on the other hand played very little because we used our higher handicap player in the playoffs and could not make it to vegas consequently the team had to rely on me because i was the highest handicap player on my team in vegas.

now for a dose of reality. i lost to a 3 in my 4th match. yea.... a friggin 3 !

i was not drinking and it was just one of those games where he did not miss any shot a 3 should not miss and when he did miss i never had a shot. it was one of the most frustrating matches i ever had and my shooting reflected my frustration.

The team in question from toronto lost because there 5 went to a 7 and the had couple of other players go up . Please note this team does not playin bar boxes as the did on nationals in there league back home. their skill level is where it should be how ever we know anyone can have there day and shoot above their ability, I will use myself as an example I play as an apa/CPA 5 in both 8 and 9 however when I was there last week at the nationals I entered a few mini mania and I broke and ran racks in both I'm sure if I played in the team events I could have easily been bumped to a 7 it's an unfortunate situation whatever way you look at it. I just thought I would shed some light on the topic. Congrats to. All who made it to the nationals hope everyone had. A great time I know I did :grin-square:
