APA Question spin off.

The other week myself and The BCA 9 ball team I am on was warming up and about to start when a younger lady from the other team came over to ask us if we where the other team and we said yes. She said she was fresh transplant from APA. Then asked how many balls she has to go to because we appeared to be really really good at pool. We told her It was straight up 9 ball, then she got an attitude and said that is not fair because we are too good for her to beat straight up. She then proceeded to grill us about how we got that good and we told he years of commitment and playing and offered to help her in anyway we could. She gave us a less then nice never mind and went back to talk with her captain. We all proceeded to play and as predicted she could not produce any quality play and got pissed that there is no way she could win and that we are just bullies. I couple of our team members ran out against her and she was less then sportsman's like and stated she was going back to APA where pool is actually fair!!.
I kind of shrugged it all off and thought well and that is why you will never understand the product and feeling of achieving your best pool game, through discipline and hard work Or maybe somehow I am just all Wrong about the situation. Go-Fight-Win...

Sounds like APA gold right there, someone bound to be a long term 2/3 and spend a good 20 years in APA not getting much better along the way.
 
We do have a women on our team she is about a 500 Fargo level player. I mainly spoke out as it will become a further downfall to the sport without adjustment and I would prefer to help players in this mindset but not sure how or if It could be done. . BBB you can never offend me at least.

I'm not sure about rating conversion from APA to BCA or BCA to APA works. I think it boils down to the directors job.

I'm more of a cash/tournament player. I did the APA for one season and it was a joke. They started me with the lowest rating amd within weeks i was at the highest handicap.

This person sounds like a lifetime low handicapper to me. It will level out pretty quickly.

Sounds to me like someone who likes to pay pool socially, hang out with friends, have a few drinks, tell a few jokes, etc. Nothing in the world wrong with that, although there is no need for her attitude. Maybe you should have explained that BCA is only for serious players who strive to reach their max potential and that fun is secondary?

I have folks on my APA team who are perfectly happy being SL-3's. I also have a player who is getting closer to FR-700 and a 2 who are right at 600. That's the beauty of recreational pool. Everyone can find their niche and progress how they see fit.
 
I agree with you jokrswylde. It was the attitude and despite us being as nice and as helpful as possible It just felt wrong overall. We tried to explain several things to the player but she wasn't hearing it. Sounds like she has found out BCA is not for her and will back to what makes her happy with pool and that I can support.
 
Jim, There is no handicap. Except for the fact that its nine ball, which as well all know means any slop win is a win and you miss late in a run and it is likely your opponent will win.
 
Thanks, not available in my area, wish it was. I play in two Vnea leagues. One is handicapped and has a very wide range of skill levels. The other is not, and everyone can run a table. Both are a lot of fun. Looks like the young lady would be happier in the first. I’m surprised her teammates hadn’t let her know what was up.
 
Maybe it would have helped if one of your team members could have dug around in their bag and given her some sort of gadget or something as a participation award. I used to shoot on a VNEA league that gave small pins for every ERO or 8-on-the-break you had. I used to keep some in my bag and was known to hand one out every now and then to someone that was whining a bit too much about fairness, bad rolls, etc. ;)🏅
 
I know the USAPL, which follows BCA rules, uses a ball count in their handicapped 10 ball format.
 
And the irony is that in a BCApl 8-ball match, its point-based, too...

Methinks the lady in question has only played APA, and no one has explained what regular pool rules are, and what to expect. As for her attitude well...there's always someone, isn't there? ;)

I think most of the people who play APA here know the basic difference between APA 9-ball and more traditional 9-ball, even if they've never played it. We have a local tourney here occasionally that uses APA skill levels for handicapping, since soooo many locals either play or have played in that league. (We just have people play to their handicap in games won)

Don't try and explain push after the break to them, tho :)
 
BCA allows league operators to run the league pretty much however they choose. Ours bases payouts on balls made per individual player.
The only handicapping is at the team level, you take each team's average and the higher team spots the lower team points per round. This will affect the weekly team standings, but not the payouts.
This system encourages people to play better, since performance is directly proportionate to payout. If you sandbag, it will cost you money. Pretty much the opposite of how other leagues are set up.
 
Fully half of the people I know in league (both APA and BCA) are there for the social activities and drinks, pool is but location and time for this to happen (and often the excuse we give our significant other).....

A couple of days ago we had a discussion on whether it is "al right" to use the 3-foul rule on lesser players--the OP, here, has illustrated a similar environment rules question.

I suggest letting these people find the league they enjoy, and we should allow them to traverse the environments with cheer.

Mitch I fully agree and we tried to be cheerful and helpful to the player. I agree that the other team likely did not bring the player up to speed. As for the three foul rule on a lesser player. If they are cocky and boastful, it could be the humbling experience they need. If they are simply just not as into it or not to a level enough to fully understand the complexity of what you are doing. Maybe leave that for later and just run out.

I don't know if I would put it that way. That's kind of like saying "you don't have to have fun if you don't want to." I think those who strive to reach their max potential ARE having fun. There's nothing in the world wrong with that either. It's just a different kind of fun - to each their own.
 
everyone is now going to shit on apa but it has its place
maybe you enjoy pool but don’t have the time or will to get really good. Apa is for you. thats what I like about apa. I could play with some family and friends that weren’t as good as me and still compete and win.
She needs to go back to apa. shes who it was made for. If she wouldn’t play in apa masters then she shouldn’t play in bca or acs
